About

About our Wilderness Program

SUWS Adolescent and Youth Programs offers therapeutic wilderness programs for adolescents ages 11 to 17 with a focus on clinical intervention and assessment. The wilderness program uses the outdoors as an alternative to conventional treatment environments, while engaging students using traditional therapeutic methods. Since 1981, SUWS programs have provided guidance and support to thousands of misdirected and at-risk teens experiencing low self-esteem, defiant behavior, attention deficit, depression, substance abuse and other behavioral issues.

Our Family Program

"SUWS Adolescent and Youth Programs is the longest running wilderness therapy program in the United States. Experienced therapists and highly skilled wilderness guides provide therapeutic and academic support to teens ages 11 to 17. Using the transformational power of the wilderness, SUWS helps teens identify and work through internal conflicts and emotional obstacles. The SUWS Adolescent Program is based on a search and rescue metaphor. We know that human beings need and want to contribute to a larger cause. At SUWS the search and rescue metaphor is the vehicle by which this is accomplished. From learning primitive-living skills to basic orienteering and first-aid techniques, students are personally challenged. In the midst of giving themselves, they find themselves. SUWS Youth is among the oldest outdoor experiential programs in the country. Founded in 1981, we have been providing guidance and support to children and their families for more than 25 years. Our students enjoy opportunities for building confidence, problem-solving skills and tangible success, with an emphasis on positive peer influence and leadership. Parents are given hands-on experience to address behavior patterns, gain new resources, and see their child as a person capable of change and success."
