Family Program

SUWS of the Carolinas is an adolescent residential treatment center that has a focus on wilderness therapy interventions. In SUWS’ leading family program, children and adolescents ages 10-17 can participate in programming in a safe residential and outdoor setting while receiving support from their loved ones. SUWS’ family program serves young people who are struggling with mental health, addiction, and educational concerns, along with those who have co-occurring disorders. Our program combines evidence-based treatments, a supportive team of professionals, and the transformative power of our beautiful natural surroundings at Pisgah National Forest to build unique therapeutic partnerships with students and their families. Our family programming can include family assessments, weekly update calls with your child’s therapist, and regular calls with a family coach who can offer support and help you set treatment goals. We also offer a series of parent workshops that are made up of a virtual workshop, a midprogram on-site workshop, and a final pre-graduation workshop — all of which provide a safe space to learn communication skills and engage in your child’s treatment experience.

Treatment Approach

Our treatment philosophy recognizes that young people and their families often need individualized support, consistent empathy and encouragement, and a strong therapeutic relationship to build the necessary tools for good health and well-being. We incorporate a family systems approach that considers the needs and strengths of both the student who is receiving treatment and their loved ones. Our treatment programs may draw on interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and more, allowing us to provide a varied and personalized approach to addressing your child’s needs. Through our residential treatment program, students can participate in individual, family, and group therapies, as well as take part in experiential therapies such as ropes courses, expeditions, and role-playing. We offer customized programs for younger students, adolescent boys and adolescent girls, and teens who have addiction and co-occurring concerns so that students can participate in a program track that supports their age, gender identity, and treatment needs.

Our Treatment Center

Our residential treatment center in Old Fort, North Carolina, is close to Asheville and Charlotte, but our dynamic family program proudly serves teens and their families from around the country as well as internationally. At SUWS of the Carolinas, we value relationships and aim to deliver comprehensive information and support that can empower students and their families to work together toward holistic healing. Parents can access our online parent resource center to view program-related resources and explore the site’s FAQ section. We offer a parent handbook, also available through our parent resource center, which offers in-depth information about our wilderness programming, clinical approach, and day-to-day treatment activities. We also encourage parents and students to maintain regular communication through the exchange of letters. At the end of a student’s time with us, we invite their family to join us for Trail’s End, a celebration of the student’s achievements during their SUWS journey and a time to practice new, healthier ways of being together.
