About

Adolescent Residential Mental Health Treatment

Our adolescent residential mental health treatment center at SUWS of the Carolinas offers comprehensive programming for children and teens ages 10-17 in the beautiful Pisgah National Forest of North Carolina. We can support young people who have autism spectrum disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), borderline personality disorder, executive functioning challenges, developmental delays, oppositional defiant disorder, academic difficulties, and more. We offer age-appropriate residential mental health services through several program tracks: our Seasons program for students ages 10-13, our Bravo program for adolescent boys ages 14-17, and our Luna program for adolescent girls ages 14-17. The core of our mental health treatment program is wilderness therapy, an effective approach that gives young people the chance to step away from everyday life and develop trust, accountability, and community-building skills in a simple and natural setting. In addition to wilderness activities, we also offer evidence-based therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and we provide medical care and medication management services as needed.

Treatment Approach

At SUWS of the Carolinas, our adolescent residential treatment center provides mental healthcare in a safe, caring setting backed by a qualified and dedicated team of therapists and instructors. For safety and effectiveness, we provide a student-to-staff ratio of 3-to-1 in each treatment setting. We also work closely with students’ parents and loved ones so that we can address the unique needs of both the young person and their family system. At the heart of our programming is a belief in connection — with each other and with the natural world. We provide a wide range of customized therapeutic experiences, including base camp days, group therapy sessions, and experiential therapies such as ropes courses, expeditions, and ceremonies and rites of passage. We also provide opportunities for students and family members to share and document program experiences, including through student workbooks and family letter exchanges.

Our Treatment Center

Located in Old Fort, North Carolina, our adolescent residential treatment center is a leader in therapeutic wilderness programming and has operated on its current campus since 1999. SUWS is also state-licensed and has multiple accreditations, including with the National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP). Our treatment center provides comprehensive communication and personalized support, beginning with the initial connection we make with each family at admission. An admissions counselor can answer your questions, discuss a potential individualized treatment plan for your loved one, and support you in determining if SUWS of the Carolinas may be a good fit. If you choose to seek treatment with us, we will typically begin planning for a supportive transition out of residential care early in the student’s stay — involving family members, therapists, and referral sources as appropriate to help prepare the student for life after graduation from SUWS.
