About

Adolescent Residential Dual Diagnosis Treatment

SUWS of the Carolinas, an adolescent residential dual diagnosis treatment center in Old Fort, North Carolina, offers a personalized, strengths-based clinical program for children and adolescents who are experiencing symptoms of behavioral health conditions. Our wilderness-focused dual diagnosis program, Phoenix Outdoor, supports students ages 14-17 who have substance use and mental health concerns. These concerns might include anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar disorder, and addictions to substances such as marijuana, alcohol, and hallucinogens. Teens in our dual diagnosis program usually stay at our residential treatment center for 60-90 days depending on individual needs. During their stay, they typically engage in daylong group activities and can receive medical care and medication management services from qualified staff members as needed. During a student’s stay, our trained therapists may incorporate evidence-based therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) into a student’s treatment plan.

Treatment Approach

At SUWS of the Carolinas, our treatment teams offer trauma-informed care in an enriching outdoor setting in the Pisgah National Forest. Our therapists work closely with instructors, who typically have backgrounds in teaching, recreational therapy, guiding, and psychology, to deliver safe and effective programming. In addition to taking part in individual, family, and group therapy opportunities, students may work with life coaches in group settings and during experiential activities as well as benefit from 12-Step programming that can deliver valuable lessons on self-acceptance and courage. To help students practice newfound skills and understand their place in the world, we rely on the simplicity of our wilderness environment, where students can focus on building relationships and trust without outside distractions or challenges. We provide students with base camp days, where they can take a break from wilderness activities and enjoy other educational experiences, and expedition days, where they can take part in challenging and satisfying outdoor experiences.

Our Treatment Center

At our adolescent residential dual diagnosis treatment center, students who are struggling with both addictions and mental health concerns can heal and develop valuable life skills in a compassionate, supportive environment. When you contact our admissions team, you will work closely with an admissions counselor to discuss your child’s unique needs and determine whether SUWS of the Carolinas may be the right fit. At SUWS, we offer a collaborative family systems approach to treatment in which we work to address the needs of adolescents and their families as holistically as possible to support lasting positive outcomes. Our program emphasizes compassion, respect, and empowerment for all, and we strive to provide learning opportunities that can help students and their families develop helpful coping and communication skills. We understand that students and families have unique goals and needs when they seek treatment. Our master’s-level therapists and trained full-time instructors are committed to supporting students as they work to accomplish their treatment goals.
