Working Towards Wellness

Spring Lake Ranch is a long-term (4-12 months or more) residential therapeutic community situated in the Green Hills of Vermont. For over 80 years we have worked with adults that struggle with a variety of mental health issues as well as co-occurring substance abuse issues. At the core of the Ranch is the belief that recovery can best begin in a community where each person is respected and contributes. The Ranch is a private-pay facility, which does not accept insurance. There is some financial assistance available based on need.

Work is the primary medium of therapy at Spring Lake Ranch. Each week the residents choose between woods, farm, shop and gardens crew. Woods Crew works in the woods, chopping down trees, splitting wood, building rock walls and making maple syrup. Farm Crew takes care of all of our animals; chickens, pigs, sheep, goats, turkeys and llamas. Shop crew builds furniture and there is also a full service auto repair shop where we fix our tractors, trucks and lawn mowers. Lastly, Gardens crew works in the garden planting, harvesting and making delicious pesto and granola which we sell at the Rutland Farmers Market. Residents work side by side with staff five hours a day, five days a week. Through this work residents learn skills and gain confidence that no matter what their struggles encompass, they too can be happy and, more importantly, lead meaningful lives.

Team Approach

When a resident comes to the Ranch they are assigned a three person support team. On that team is a House Advisor, Resident Advocate and Clinical Team Leader. The House Advisor helps them in the house, may work with them on crew and provides peer support. The Resident Advocate acts like a mentor or coach who guides the resident on day to day decisions and provides feedback. The Clinical Team Leader provides scheduled weekly one on one sessions but is also here five days a week to talk about issues as they arise. An adjunct member of the team is the psychiatrist who handles any medication adjustments when needed. Our experiential learning approach, combined with new advances in individual therapeutic technique and pharmacology, make the Ranch a dynamic therapeutic experience in a natural inclusive environment. The suggested length of stay is six to twelve months but almost half of the clients choose to stay on and go into our step down program twelve miles away in the small city of Rutland, VT.
