Benefits of Medication-Assisted Treatment
South Portland Comprehensive Treatment Center (CTC) offers medication-assisted treatment — also known as MAT — for adults age 18 and older who are suffering from opioid addictions. MAT takes a whole-person approach to opioid addiction treatment, using both prescription medication and counseling to support patients as they pursue long-term recovery. Research supports the effectiveness of MAT, and respected organizations such as the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recommend MAT for the treatment of opioid addiction. At South Portland CTC, we offer methadone or Suboxone as part of each patient’s treatment plan. These medications can provide relief from the distressing symptoms and drug cravings associated with opioid withdrawal and help patients focus on recovery. Our CTC also provides individual and group therapies to guide you during treatment. Therapy, which forms a key part of MAT, can allow you to safely explore your thoughts, feelings, and emotions and develop strategies that may help you avoid relapse. MAT may also help you improve your social functioning and maintain employment, among other benefits. What to Expect
While you may be familiar with the services offered by methadone clinics in general, you might have specific questions about what to expect at our CTC. One of the key features of our outpatient MAT program is personalized care: We aim to learn about your specific needs and goals and create an individualized treatment plan that can support your unique recovery journey. As part of our intake process, we will also evaluate your health and your current and past drug use and determine the medication that may be most appropriate for you. We understand that you may have questions, so we will provide time for you to discuss your concerns and get the answers you need. We want you to embrace your personal recovery process during your time in MAT. At our CTC, there are many ways you can do this, including collaborating with our staff throughout the treatment process, learning new skills during therapy, and giving and receiving valuable support during group counseling sessions.
