Here are a few basic steps that we follow for the treatment of individuals suffering from co-occurring disorders
What is Dual Diagnosis?
Dual diagnosis also known as co-occurring disorders is a very broad category. It is used to distinguish times when someone suffering from addiction also experiences mental illness. It may range from someone suffering from mild depression because of binge drinking to someone suffering from a bipolar disorder that becomes severe when that person abuses heroin during periods of frenzy. Either mental illness or addiction can develop first. An individual suffering from mental health disorders may turn to substance abuse as a form of self-medication, only to make the mental health condition worse. The vice versa situation is also possible. A person might develop co-occurring disorders due to continued substance abuse, because of the effect drugs have on one’s moods, brain chemistry and behavior.
The Symptoms of Dual Diagnosis
The symptoms of dual diagnosis may vary widely from person to person. However, knowing the warning signs can help identify whether the individual is in need of a dual diagnosis treatment center. The defining characteristic of dual diagnosis is that both a mental health and substance abuse disorder occur simultaneously. The symptoms of substance abuse and dual diagnosis include: Withdrawal from friends and family, Developing tolerance and withdrawal symptom, Using substances under dangerous conditions, Feeling like you need the drug to be able to function
