Practical Recovery Psychology Group, Treatment Center in La Jolla

Evidence-Based, Non-12-Step Treatment

The recent Surgeon General's report (November, 2016) recommends individualized addiction treatment over standardized "programs." At Practical Recovery we have been providing fully individualized, self-empowering, evidence-based, non-12-step treatment for over 30 years. Our clients are not forced into a one-size fits all program. Instead, they actively participate in the design and implementation of their own treatment, to maximize their engagement and success. Are you ready to create your own unique path to change? Would you like your skills, abilities and ideas to be respected? Practical Recovery takes a self-empowering approach. The 12-step, powerlessness approach works well for some but not for everyone. Our approach promotes your own ability to resolve addiction and related issues rather than making you reliant on a higher power, a group, and a sponsor.

Founded by Tom Horvath, PhD., ABPP

Practical Recovery was founded by nationally recognized addiction treatment expert, Tom Horvath, Ph.D., ABPP. Dr. Horvath was the president of SMART Recovery for 20 years, and was one of its co-founders in 1994. For over 30 years he has been providing individualized treatment for addictive behaviors. Whether you choose to work with Dr. Horvath himself, another of our mostly doctoral level licensed mental health professionals, or other staff (including counselors and recovery coaches), you can be confident you're getting non-12-step, individualized care provided by highly trained professionals. We focus on developing and maintaining motivation to change, coping with craving, identifying and resolving underlying problems, improving relationships, achieving greater lifestyle balance, and living with greater meaning and purpose.

Not ready to go away for 30 days?

We provide individual sessions, couples and family sessions, a morning and evening IOP (Intensive Outpatient), and our signature service, the IIOP (Individual Intensive Outpatient). The IIOP is an alternative to inpatient (residential) treatment. IIOP clients participate in more clinical treatment than in almost any rehab, and at a substantially lower cost. Our core service is individual sessions that focus on specific underlying concerns. Couples and family sessions are encouraged but not required. Groups are available but not required. Scheduling is completely flexible. If our clients choose to attend a mutual help group they usually choose SMART Recovery rather than a 12-step group. Call us to find out how we can tailor treatment to address your specific goals, values and situation.
