What is Neurofeedback?
Using Neurofeedback, people of all ages can effortlessly learn to re-condition their brains to correct unbalanced brain wave activity, resulting in improved day-to-day functioning. You can think of Neurofeedback as "brain training." Like a muscle, your brain gets stronger the more you train it. When the brain works better, you feel better and do better. Neurofeedback has an 85 - 90% success rate in reducing symptoms of ADHD, and has been deemed a "Level 1, Best Support Treatment" by the American Academy of Pediatrics for ADHD, which is the highest level of support. Research using neurofeedback with Autism shows promising results, such as some students improving sufficiently to be mainstreamed into regular classes. In cases such as behavioral problems in children (e.g., temper tantrums, aggression), Neurofeedback can help children learn to control impulsive behaviors. For depression, a gradual lifting of mood and energy can occur. In cases of anxiety, people can experience decreased frequency and intensity of anxiety. For migraines, there's a reduction of intensity, duration and frequency, even for people resistant to medication. With Neurofeedback, unlike medications, you are in control of your own treatment, there are no side effects, and training is time-limited.
How does Neurofeedback work?
In EEG Neurofeedback, non-invasive sensors are placed on the client's scalp and ears, which record their brainwaves, and send this information to a computer. HEG Neurofeedback uses an infrared sensor which records brain metabolism. The client watches a video on a screen in front of them, and when their brainwave pattern (or brain metabolism) moves in a positive direction, the screen becomes brighter, which rewards them. The client learns how to achieve a state of focused relaxation over time by being rewarded for a positive brainwave pattern. Prior to EEG brainwave training, clients are evaluated using a qualitative EEG analysis which generates a brainwave map. This shows what brainwaves need to be trained and in which parts of the brain. The conditions for which we have documented, published evidence of effectiveness are: ADHD/ADD, Addiction, Anxiety, Attachment Disorder, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Chronic Pain, Cognitive Decline in the elderly, Depression, Migraines, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD), Learning Disabilities, Relaxation, Sleep Disorders, Tourette's Syndrome/Tics, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and teeth grinding (Bruxism). Conditions for which we have preliminary, clinical evidence of effectiveness include: Autism/Asperger's Disorder, Conduct Disorders, Stroke, Pre-menstrual syndrome, and Peak Performance.
Psychotherapy Services
At BVCNC we also offer psychotherapy to clients 18 years and older, and are dedicated to assisting each person according to their unique needs and circumstances. We meet our clients where they are and honor their innate capacity to heal and grow. We believe that people are not "broken" but have adapted to past circumstances in ways that may not suit them currently. We assist them in bringing their current coping skills in line with their present circumstances. The methods we employ have been shown to be effective through both research studies and our own experience. Psychotherapy is not a "one size fits all" endeavor. Therefore, we constantly work to expand our knowledge base by regularly attending conferences featuring internationally recognized experts in the treatment of trauma, PTSD, addictions and other challenges which interfere with a person's quality of life. Along with talk therapy and Neurofeedback, we offer HRV Biofeedback, The Emotional Freedom Technique (Tapping), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), which is an innovative and highly effective treatment for processing and healing emotional trauma. Please call or email us to discuss further how we can assist you or your family.
