About

Benefits of Medication-Assisted Treatment

Communities throughout the United States continue to be negatively affected by epidemic levels of opioid abuse and addiction. One of the reasons why opioid addiction is such a devastating disorder is that the pain of withdrawal can quickly overwhelm a person’s efforts to stop using this substance. But when a person begins their recovery journey at North Florida Comprehensive Treatment Center (CTC), they can receive research-supported services to help them end their opioid abuse and build a foundation for successful, long-term recovery. Our CTC offers medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for adults who have developed addictions to heroin, prescription painkillers, and other opioids. MAT is an evidence-based approach that combines prescription medication with counseling. The medications that we prescribe help relieve the distressing symptoms of opioid withdrawal, allowing people to end opioid use more easily. The counseling component of MAT at North Florida CTC helps adults address the behavioral, emotional, and social aspects of opioid addiction and recovery. During counseling, adults can develop the skills that will help them live healthier lives without abusing opioids.

What to Expect

At North Florida CTC, we offer customized care that is provided by skilled professionals in a safe and welcoming environment. Our team understands that the impact of opioid addiction can vary considerably from person to person. Here, there is no such thing as “one size fits all” treatment for opioid addiction. We will assess the full scope of your needs, then develop a personalized plan that can help you achieve your goals. One of your first experiences with us will be to complete a physical examination. You will also meet with a member of our team to discuss the amount and frequency of your opioid use, your treatment history, and other relevant matters. This will help us determine which medication and counseling services may be best for you. You may receive a prescription for methadone or buprenorphine. Both medications have documented histories of safety and effectiveness. You may also benefit from individual and group counseling. Individual counseling allows you to confidentially discuss personal matters with a trained professional. Group sessions can help you learn how to avoid triggers, resolve conflicts, and manage stress without turning to opioids.
