Why we create long-term healing

At Newport Academy, our goal is sustainable healing. The maladaptive coping mechanisms for which we see teens enter treatment include self-harm, substance abuse, eating disorders, and other behavioral disorders. We strongly believe that these self-destructive adolescent behaviors are external manifestations, or symptoms, of underlying issues, such as trauma, abandonment, anxiety, depression, abuse, neglect, and other disruptions in the family system. Focusing on these underlying issues supports true healing and creates positive, long-term results. By incorporating multiple modalities of psychological and experiential therapies, and a dedication to treating the entire family, we offer the highest-quality teen treatment program. Our environment provides the safety, security, and, above all, the unconditional love that teens and their families need in order to heal.

Newport Academy strongly believes in the importance of an integrative treatment model and intensive therapy with teens in individual, family, and multi-family group settings. We also understand that teens need to remain inspired and engaged in the recovery process if treatment outcomes are to be successful. With this in mind, we have developed a program in which teens participate in a range of experiential therapies, such as art therapy, mixed martial arts, yoga and meditation, and Equine Assisted Therapy, allowing them to practice self-expression and build trusting relationships in a variety of ways. Our programs address the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—and are driven by our mission to empower teens and restore families.

Family and Education

Newport Academy addresses teen mental health in the context of the family, in order to increase the effectiveness of treatment and recovery for both the adolescent and the family system. Families are involved from the beginning, when adolescents are diagnosed and an individual treatment plan is developed. Family members participate in the assessment process and are asked to complete a comprehensive Family Assessment. The information gathered from diagnostic interviews frames the family member's involvement and is integrated into the adolescents' treatment plan. The family treatment plan is updated throughout each teen’s stay as treatment needs change. Families attend individual and group therapy during the week, as well as mandatory involvement in the Family Program on the weekend. Teens at Newport Academy continue their education in a tailored and structured academic program. To ensure that they excel academically, Newport Academy's teachers and tutors work collaboratively with the student, their teachers and school district at home, their parents, and their on-site treatment team.
