Our intensive trauma-focused therapy is proven-effective and focuses on deep healing. We have found that intensive trauma-focused therapy is more efficient than weekly hourly therapy. We use the most efficient of the proven-effective trauma healing therapies: eye movement desensitization & reprocessing (EMDR) and progressive counting (PC). Our founder and executive director, Ricky Greenwald, PsyD, is a leading expert in EMDR, and the developer of PC as well as our intensive therapy model. Sometimes, people turn to drugs or alcohol as a way to cope with stress, the effects of trauma, or difficult life circumstances.
Clients who participate in the detoxification program at The Refuge can benefit from medical supervision during the initial stages of recovery. Doctors, registered nurses, and certified nursing assistants oversee the withdrawal process and are available to provide medical care if any complications arise during detox. These medical professionals are qualified to administer Suboxone, Subutex, and Vivitrol for clients who need them. A typical morning for clients in our detox program may involve taking a walk, journaling, and completing worksheets about how they are feeling mentally, physically, and emotionally. After lunch, clients may have individual therapy sessions, rest, exercise, and work on personal assignments. After dinner, clients attend group therapy sessions and work with qualified professionals to learn tools for continued recovery. Therapies at our residential treatment center incorporate principles of the 12-Step process, and we believe that these steps are critical for long-term recovery.

Substance use disorders are closely linked with mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, ADHD, OCD, personality disorders and schizophrenia.
In today's fast-paced society, with substances, experiences and products to stave off boredom everywhere, addiction is more common than ever. Unfortunately, many people who experience compulsive cravings for drugs or other harmful behaviors experience underlying issues that need to be addressed. Many people who turn to substance abuse do so because it fulfills a need. Far from being a moral failing, it's a legitimate reaction to a problem in your life. But whether you use drugs or alcohol to calm down after a hard day, get into the party spirit or ease the symptoms of anxiety, the help it lends is an illusion. And while these solutions seem effective in the short term, they do more harm than good long-term. Substance use disorders are very tricky. If you're in the throes of one, there's a good chance you've minimized the problem or brushed it off as a harmless coping mechanism. The truth is that abusing substances and coping with the perceived stigma of using them can alter brain chemistry, potentially leading to more serious problems. As someone going through this kind of turmoil, the last thing you need is judgment.

Adolescents’ bodies and brains are still developing, so when young people struggle with addictions, they can be negatively impacted in unique ways. Adolescents who have substance use disorders can experience impaired brain development, academic problems, and struggles with interpersonal relationships. They can also be at risk for developing mental health concerns. At Village Behavioral Health, we believe that addressing mental health concerns and addictions together through dual diagnosis treatment can lead to the most optimal results for young people. We offer three dual diagnosis programs that are organized by gender and age group. Our Nova Program serves youths ages 10-12 of all genders who are suffering from mental health concerns and co-occurring addictions. We also have residential programs for teen girls and boys ages 13-17 who need dual diagnosis treatment.

When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
