Life contains happiness and joy but all of us have pain, suffering and hardship at times. In fact, we are "guaranteed" to have difficulties as we journey through life. Often people seek counseling at just such moments. What then, is the goal of counseling? We believe that counseling should first direct people to God since He is the one that brings the power to heal. We can know Him through Scripture and our relationship to one another. Secondly, we also believe that there are helpful truths contained in the observations of human behavior (psychology). While these beliefs inform our counseling approach, we will always leave it up to our client as to whether they are included in their counseling. Overall, we desire to be used by God to be a refuge for our clients and we love to see people experience joy and wholeness. Ultimately, we hope that counseling produces health in heart, soul and mind.

Durham, NC 27707
Abhaya Wellness is a clinically owned and operated psychotherapy office that believes in supporting and creating systems of care for individuals, groups, families, and couples on their path of wellness. Our system is built by, and around, our highly skilled and diverse clinical team which keeps our quality of care at the center of everything we do. Our organization strives to create a mindfulness inspired clinically driven experience that fosters high levels of continuity of care, a strong sense of accountability, and a fearless approach to clinical work. Additionally, because our therapists have a deep understanding of our client’s needs and treatment progress, we can be more effective in tailoring the treatment process to meet your needs and achieving your goals. People often approach this process as “finding the right therapist”. We believe it is equally important to find the right organization that aligns with your values, goals, and preferences.

Whereas most IOPs primarily treat substance use, IOP Services is a mental health IOP, supporting persons who are experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, and challenging life transitions.
IOP Services provides “intensive outpatient” therapy for adults who would benefit from more than just "normal therapy" (i.e., meeting for an hour every week or two with your therapist) but do not need complete hospitalization or residential treatment. IOP Services provides nine hours of group therapy per week to each client in addition to targeted individual support. From an IOP, you can "step up" into a residential program if you need more support or "step down" into less intensive forms of therapy when you're feeling better. You decide what works best for you.

Finding it difficult to cope with day-to-day stressors is a common experience. Maybe it seems as though your emotions are difficult to control or that your emotions are controlling your life. Perhaps you cannot seem to move beyond anxiety or depression no matter how hard you try. For some, interpersonal difficulties seem to be a problem. You may find it difficult to get along with others, or, you would like more meaningful relationships, but aren't quite sure how to go about connecting with others.

Trauma and PTSD Treatment Centers
When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
