Teen Intensive Outpatient Program in Petaluma, CA
The Muir Wood teen IOP in Petaluma, CA, provides outpatient treatment for teens, ages 12 to 17, with dual-diagnosis (mental health and/or substance use) issues. We help teens manage mental health conditions and associated addictions. While residential treatment is one option for treatment, outpatient treatment gives families more flexibility and options for help. Either way, our goal is to provide hope and healing. Our highly credentialed team works closely with clients and their families to develop a personalized treatment plan, including individual, group, and family therapy. Muir Wood also collaborates with Petaluma community providers to best support teens’ long-term recovery and sustained healing. 9-Hours of Outpatient Treatment Weekly
Our intensive outpatient program for teens in Petaluma provides nine hours of therapy each week. Clients attend individual and group therapy sessions on weekday evenings. This treatment plan focuses on relapse prevention, managing emotions, and lifelong recovery and coping skills. For those working on sobriety, we provide a few additional supports, including two additional hours of therapy per week—one individual therapy session and one family therapy session. Once-weekly drug testing is provided as needed. We also strongly encourage participation in community 12-step meetings for young people. Parents are expected to attend Muir Wood’s virtual weekly parent psychoeducation and support groups to receive additional support and learn skills that aid in the family’s healing process. Our Treatment Approaches
Personal Inventory Session: This session serves as a brief check-in to review the weekend’s events and set intentions for the week ahead. Teens can report on obstacles in their recovery, check in with program staff about personal struggles, and identify dynamics that may need exploration in individualized sessions or particular groups in the coming week. This group helps teens focus on the impact they can make in their own recovery process. Seeking Safety Group: Seeking Safety is an evidence-based group that helps teens with stress, trauma, and substance use disorders. Clients establish safety by exploring the impact of trauma and identifying and understanding triggers to addictive behavior. They then can explore how to build healthy relationships, manage symptoms such as dissociation and self-harm, and restore ideals that have been lost. This group provides teens with coping skills and peer support. Self and Relationships Group: This group offers teens the opportunity to reflect on all aspects of relationships and communication in their lives, including with their peers and families, communications via social media, and self-talk.
