Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is a multifaceted approach to opioid addiction treatment.
Fear of change and uncertainty about what to expect in a MAT program can prevent people from getting the professional help that can significantly improve their lives. To help prospective patients overcome these obstacles, we are happy to explain what happens when a person receives care in our center. On a new patient’s first day with us, they usually complete a thorough intake assessment. This includes a physical examination with a doctor and a discussion of their past opioid use, their treatment history, and other relevant matters. After the assessment, the doctor who conducted the patient’s exam may write them a prescription for methadone, Suboxone, or buprenorphine. The doctor will explain the features and potential side effects of the medication they prescribe, and they can answer any questions the patient has. We also typically schedule the patient’s initial counseling sessions during their first visit to our center. We provide both individual and group counseling. During these sessions, patients can learn about the disease of addiction, develop and practice essential relapse prevention skills, and share support with other adults who are working toward a similar goal.

Of course, medication alone cannot address the social, psychological, and behavioral aspects of opioid addiction and recovery.
Entering a MAT program for help with opioid addiction can be a significant first step toward a much healthier and more hopeful future. It can also be a challenging decision and a nerve-wracking experience. At our center, we understand that change can be difficult, even when you know that the change will have a positive impact on your life. To help dispel any concerns you may be having, we are happy to provide you with a description of what happens when you receive care at our center. One of your first activities with us will be to complete an intake assessment. This process may include answering some questions about your health, treatment history, and prior opioid abuse. It will also involve a physical examination with one of our doctors. After your assessment, you may receive a prescription for either methadone or Suboxone to help you stop using opioids. The doctor who writes your prescription will be able to answer any questions you have about the medication. During your first day with us, we may also schedule your initial counseling sessions. We provide individual and group counseling to help you establish a solid foundation for long-term recovery from an opioid addiction.

We offer Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help patients reframe negative thoughts and behaviors, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to address trauma at its core. Additionally, we incorporate mindfulness-based therapies to foster emotional regulation and stress reduction, empowering patients to manage their mental health in everyday life. Our approach goes beyond traditional methods by utilizing neurofeedback, which helps patients regulate brain activity, promoting self-awareness and emotional stability. This combination of science-backed therapies and holistic practices allows us to create personalized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s unique needs. By integrating these advanced modalities with compassionate care, we help patients achieve lasting recovery from both mental health and substance abuse challenges, all within the flexibility of an outpatient setting.
