Medication-assisted treatment, which is commonly referred to as MAT, is a dynamic approach to opioid addiction treatment for adults.
If you have never participated in MAT for opioid addiction before, it is completely understandable to have questions about what you can expect from this approach, as well as what you may be required to do during treatment. We always want you to have the answers you need so that you can play an active and informed role in all aspects of your care. The first time you arrive at our center, you will be greeted by a staff member who may confirm some basic information with you. After this, you will complete a thorough intake assessment, which will include a physical examination with a doctor. The doctor who conducts your exam will write you a prescription for methadone, buprenorphine, or Suboxone. They will also explain the features of the medication they prescribe and answer any questions you have. During this same visit, we may also schedule your first counseling sessions. While you are enrolled in our MAT program, you will have the opportunity to take part in individual and group counseling sessions. In addition to providing you with valuable information and guidance, counseling can introduce you to the power of sharing support with other members of the recovery community.

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is a multifaceted approach to opioid addiction treatment.
Fear of change and uncertainty about what to expect in a MAT program can prevent people from getting the professional help that can significantly improve their lives. To help prospective patients overcome these obstacles, we are happy to explain what happens when a person receives care in our center. On a new patient’s first day with us, they usually complete a thorough intake assessment. This includes a physical examination with a doctor and a discussion of their past opioid use, their treatment history, and other relevant matters. After the assessment, the doctor who conducted the patient’s exam may write them a prescription for methadone, Suboxone, or buprenorphine. The doctor will explain the features and potential side effects of the medication they prescribe, and they can answer any questions the patient has. We also typically schedule the patient’s initial counseling sessions during their first visit to our center. We provide both individual and group counseling. During these sessions, patients can learn about the disease of addiction, develop and practice essential relapse prevention skills, and share support with other adults who are working toward a similar goal.

Of course, medication alone cannot address the social, psychological, and behavioral aspects of opioid addiction and recovery.
Entering a MAT program for help with opioid addiction can be a significant first step toward a much healthier and more hopeful future. It can also be a challenging decision and a nerve-wracking experience. At our center, we understand that change can be difficult, even when you know that the change will have a positive impact on your life. To help dispel any concerns you may be having, we are happy to provide you with a description of what happens when you receive care at our center. One of your first activities with us will be to complete an intake assessment. This process may include answering some questions about your health, treatment history, and prior opioid abuse. It will also involve a physical examination with one of our doctors. After your assessment, you may receive a prescription for either methadone or Suboxone to help you stop using opioids. The doctor who writes your prescription will be able to answer any questions you have about the medication. During your first day with us, we may also schedule your initial counseling sessions. We provide individual and group counseling to help you establish a solid foundation for long-term recovery from an opioid addiction.
