Benefits of Medication-Assisted Treatment
Medication-assisted treatment, or MAT, can be an extremely beneficial form of care for adults who have developed opioid addictions. MAT, which combines prescription medication and counseling, has been closely studied in the United States for several decades. Through the years, it has proved to be a safe and effective means of helping people end their opioid use and achieve long-term recovery. The prescription medications that are approved for use in MAT programs can ease the drug cravings and other symptoms that are characteristic of opioid withdrawal. When a person takes a prescription medication as directed by a qualified physician in the context of a MAT program, they may find it much easier to stop using opioids. Some people take these medications for a relatively short period of time and then taper their use under a doctor’s supervision. Others continue to use prescription medications for months or years. The counseling component of MAT addresses the psychological, behavioral, and social aspects of opioid addiction and recovery. Counseling helps MAT patients learn how to respond to stress, conflicts, and other triggers without resorting to opioid abuse.
What to Expect
At Lynchburg Comprehensive Treatment Center (CTC), we realize that change can be difficult, even when you are confident that the change will have a positive impact on your life. For this reason, we work to maintain a welcoming environment where adults feel supported and empowered. One of your first activities at our center will be to complete a thorough assessment, including a physical exam. Following this assessment, one of our doctors may prescribe one of the following medications: methadone, buprenorphine, Suboxone, or Vivitrol. The doctor will explain the benefits and potential side effects of the medication they prescribe, and they will answer any questions you have. During your initial visit, we may also schedule your first counseling sessions. While you are participating in MAT at our center, you may take part in individual and group counseling. Both types of sessions are led by experienced professionals. During individual sessions, you can address personal topics you may be hesitant about bringing up in a group setting. During groups, you can practice relapse prevention skills and discover the power of sharing support with other members of the recovery community.
Our Comprehensive Treatment Center
Lynchburg CTC is located in historic Lynchburg, Virginia, in the foothills of the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains. We provide outpatient medication-assisted treatment for adults age 18 and older of all genders who have developed addictions to heroin, morphine, prescription painkillers, and other opioids. Our convenient location is easily accessible from communities throughout Amherst, Bedford, Appomattox, and Campbell counties. Adults who receive care at Lynchburg CTC work in close collaboration with a team of skilled professionals, including doctors, nurses, and counselors. These dedicated experts take the time to get to know each patient as a unique individual so that we can be sure that we are providing the focused services that will best prepare them for long-term success. We know that many people who develop opioid use disorder (which is the clinical term for opioid addiction) also struggle with shame, guilt, and other negative emotions, and we work diligently to remind all patients that they are valuable people who deserve to be treated in a dignified and respectful manner. With our help, adults can end their opioid use and reconnect with the best version of themselves.
