About

Long Island DBT Group

Established in 2001, Long Island DBT Group is a DBT adherent private practice consisting of highly skilled clinical social workers and psychologists. Our dedicated staff has been intensively trained by Behavioral Tech, LLC, a training institute founded by the creator of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Dr. Marsha Linehan. Our mission at LI DBT Group is to provide evidence-based treatment to help our clients find a way out of their suffering and build a life worth living. We specialize in the treatment of borderline personality disorder and co-ocurring disorders including post-traumatic stress disorder, complex trauma, depression, anxiety, substance abuse and eating disorders. DBT is a modified form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) that combines mindfulness and acceptance-based strategies with change-oriented strategies. DBT is specially designed to help individuals who have intense, difficult to manage emotions learn new ways to manage their feelings without engaging in impulsive behaviors. Our clients often experience intense mood swings, trouble wth anger, impulsive behavior, difficulty managing relationships, fear of abandonment and recurrent suicidal or self-injurious behavior. Our comprehensive DBT program has four components which include individual therapy, skills training group, phone coaching, and a consultation team for therapists.

Family Education and Support Program

We offer education and support sessions for parents and family members to help them understand the biosocial origins of their loved one's experience. In group and/or individual sessions, family members learn to apply effective communication and behavior management skills in order to be part of the solution. Family members also learn and practice DBT skills such as mindfulness, validation and walking the middle path. They learn to regulate their own fear and anger so that they can communicate effectively and consistently with their loved ones without getting distracted by angry outbursts and self-destructive behavior.

Trauma Survivors Program

Our skilled clinicians use a mind-body approach to help survivors reduce the traumatic impact of their experience, including but not limited to childhood abuse, neglect, sexual trauma, domestic violence, unresolved grief due to traumatic loss, pervasively invalidating environments, and peer victimization/bullying. We use cognitive behavioral therapy, including prolonged exposure (PE) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), along with mindfulness, breath work and yoga to process the trauma. This can be done in individual and specialized group sessions.
