Benefits of Medication-Assisted Treatment
Throughout the 21st century, the United States has been impacted by epidemic levels of opioid abuse, addiction, and overdose. In 2000, opioid overdoses were responsible for about 8,400 deaths in the U.S. By 2020, the annual number of opioid overdose deaths in the U.S. had risen to more than 68,000. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is an evidence-based approach that can be a valuable tool in the effort to reverse this trend. People who take part in MAT receive prescription medications that can ease the intense cravings and other distressing symptoms that are characteristic of opioid withdrawal. When they take these medications as directed, they may find it easier to stop using heroin, prescription pills, morphine, fentanyl, and other opioids. However, prescription medication cannot address the behavioral and social aspects of opioid addiction and recovery. To help people make the lifestyle changes that will support long-term recovery from opioid addiction, MAT programs also provide counseling. During counseling sessions, MAT patients can learn to manage stress, resolve conflicts, and deal with other difficult circumstances in a healthy manner without resorting to opioid abuse.
What to Expect
When someone is considering getting MAT for an opioid addiction, uncertainties about what they can expect during treatment can delay or prevent them from getting the care that can significantly improve their life. To eliminate this potential obstacle, we are happy to provide prospective patients with a detailed account of what occurs at our center, starting with their first day in our care. New patients typically begin their time with us by completing a thorough intake assessment, receiving a prescription for one of the medications we are authorized to provide, and scheduling their initial counseling sessions. Following the patient’s assessment, which includes a physical examination, the doctor who conducted their exam may write them a prescription for methadone, buprenorphine, or Suboxone. The doctor can explain the potential side effects of the medication and review the process of determining the optimal dosage level. They will also be available to answer any questions the patient has. Another member of our staff will discuss the counseling component of the patient’s treatment. All adults who receive MAT at our center participate in individual and group counseling sessions.
Our Comprehensive Treatment Center
Layton Comprehensive Treatment Center (CTC) in Layton, Utah, provides outpatient medication-assisted treatment for adults age 18 and older of all genders who have developed addictions to opioids. Our CTC is about 5 miles east of Syracuse, 8 miles north of Farmington, and 14 miles south of Ogden. We are just a short drive from Veterans Memorial Highway (U.S. Route 15), which provides convenient access from communities throughout Davis and Weber counties. Adults who receive MAT for opioid addiction at our CTC work with a team that includes doctors, nurses, and counselors. These professionals are committed to providing superior care in a safe and supportive environment. We realize that many people who enter treatment for opioid addiction have experienced shame, guilt, and low self-esteem, and we make a concerted effort to demonstrate to every patient that they are a valuable individual who is worthy of being treated with respect. Our commitment to patient service includes offering same-day admissions and accepting several forms of insurance. Patients may use TRICARE, Veterans Affairs healthcare benefits, Medicare, Medicaid, and most major commercial plans to pay for their care.
