THE CLINIC'S APPROACH
The Clinic reflects Karen Horney's optimistic and humanistic philosophy that individuals have the capacity to grow and change throughout life. Along with society and culture, intimate relationships with others are the most important influences on our personal development. Difficulties in life often arise when early relationships provoke anxiety or adversity, which in turn interferes with our growth. Dr. Horney was convinced that treatment geared at understanding the self, and the subsequent outgrowth of such difficulties, would restore a person to a path of personal self-realization. This basic philosophy is the guiding principle of all Clinic services. It is the foundation from which patients gain an understanding of themselves, develop the capacity to grow and change, and enrich their lives. The staff of the Clinic conducts treatment with the underlying conviction that each person has the inherent capacity to improve one's life and become increasingly warm, spontaneous, joyful, and unafraid.
GETTING STARTED
Our admission procedure involves an initial interview, generally with our intake social worker. This is often a one-on-one interview with the applicant, but if appropriate, family members and other important people in the applicant's life may be included. Applicants receive a thorough mental health evaluation, including the gathering of a psycho-social history, psychological evaluation, and psychiatric interview, if necessary. Each case is reviewed by the Admissions Committee to determine whether therapy at the Clinic would be beneficial. Patients are generally assigned to therapists within a few days. Most patients are assigned to some form of individual treatment including counseling, supportive psychotherapy, psychoanalytic therapy or psychoanalysis. Psychopharmacological (psychiatric) therapy is also available for patients receiving psychotherapy. Each individual's treatment is characterized by an intensely personalized approach, greatly increasing the probability of successful results.
