Outpatient Eating Disorder Specialists

Columbus Park is New York's premier evidence-based outpatient treatment center for eating disorders. We are experts in treating anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, emotional eating, and compulsive exercise. We also treat many individuals with eating or weight struggles that don't quite fall into a specific diagnosis or category, but are troublesome nonetheless. We use current, research-based treatments including enhanced cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT-E), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT-ED), and family-based treatment (FBT). We have a flexible but comprehensive Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Our IOP is in-network with Aetna and BCBS health insurance. Outpatient services are provided via our affiliate, Park South Psychoherapy, and are not in-network with insurance.

Flexibility

Columbus Park clients appreciate our flexibility, which allows us to accommodate a wide range of needs, preferences, and schedules. -- We treat adolescents and adults, men and women -- We offer daytime and evening hours -- We accommodate the full range of dietary preferences and restrictions, from vegan to kosher. -- We offer individual, group, and family supported meal services. -- We offer groups across a range of topics, including body image, self-soothing/coping, impulse control, and meal planning. -- We offer supported group dining experiences at lunch and dinner to help work through anxiety and fear in relation to food or certain food types. -- We offer Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) as an option for those who need the highest level of therapeutic support but who wish to stay in an outpatient setting. -- We have a comprehensive DBT program consisting of group DBT skills training, individual DBT and phone coaching, as needed.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy Track

One of the approaches we use is Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), an evidence-based mix of eastern and western approaches that we use to treat some patients with eating disorders. With DBT skills training you'll learn mindfulness, how to better regulate your emotions, and how to more safely tolerate distress. DBT was originally designed to address patterns of intense or extreme emotional reactions, interpersonal chaos, impulsivity, self-harm or suicidal behavior. Over time, the application of DBT has expanded to very effectively treat certain eating disorders patients. DBT has been shown effective in multiple research trials.

Columbus Park's Groups

Supported Dining

We provide quality, balanced, varied meals served with the support and guidance of our sensitive and knowledgeable providers. The communal dining experience takes place in the comfortable, non-institutional setting of our center's dining room. We promote a relaxed and congenial environment for the meal portion of the session, followed by thorough processing of the physical and emotional experiences of the meal. There are an abundance of opportunities to practice self-selection and self-portioning and "real life" dining out experiences with the support of our clinicians in a variety of restaurant settings.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Coping Skills Training

Columbus Park DBT Group addresses eating disordered behaviors and co-occurring issues such as depression, anxiety and self-harm. Our highly trained and dedicated professionals balance empathy and acceptance with work toward changing problematic behaviors. Consistent with the overarching goal of DBT, we are committed to improving the quality of life of our clients while fostering more control, meaning and pleasure in their lives. This is the standard DBT model that has been shown to be effective in multiple research trials.

Group Therapies for Eating Disorders

Columbus Park has group therapy options offered during both day and evening hours. Patients may participate in a single group or in multiple groups. Groups include: Open Process Group (group compositions vary based on age, diagnosis, phase of recovery), Body Image Group, Emotional Eating, Group Dining Out, Sustaining Recovery and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Group therapy is a powerful treatment modality where a therapist conducts a treatment session with several patients together at the same time. The recognition of shared feelings and experiences within the group functions to decrease individual isolation and serves as powerful validation of one's personal suffering.
