Adult Intensive Outpatient Program
Located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Erlanger Behavioral Health Hospital provides an intensive outpatient program (IOP) for adults age 18 and older who are struggling with mental health disorders. This program is designed to help people who have developed anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other mental health concerns, as well as those who have become addicted to alcohol or another drug. We make all admissions decisions on an individual basis, but in general, our IOP serves people who can benefit from structured clinical care but do not require round-the-clock support. This means that adults may step down to our IOP after completing an inpatient or residential program, or they may enter treatment with us directly at the IOP level. Flexible scheduling is one of the many features of our IOP. We offer three hours of care each day, with participants having the option of attending treatment three to five days per week. This approach allows people to learn new skills during treatment and practice them in a real-world environment during nontreatment hours. They can then process their experiences and receive feedback during their next session. Treatment Approach
At Erlanger Behavioral Health Hospital, we believe that each person who turns to us for care deserves to receive personalized treatment in a safe and respectful environment. At the intensive outpatient level, we also use the power of mutual support to help our patients achieve their goals. To accomplish these objectives, we employ group therapy as the main method of treatment at the IOP level. Groups are structured forums where patients can gain vital information, build new skills, and share support with others who have had similar experiences. A typical treatment day includes multiple groups, all of which are led by an experienced professional. Group therapy may incorporate cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). CBT helps people replace self-defeating thought and behavior patterns with more beneficial ways of thinking and acting. DBT focuses on mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and maintaining healthy relationships. Prior to transitioning out of our IOP, patients may also receive a detailed discharge plan to guide their continued progress. What to Expect
When a person enters our IOP, they will be in a safe space where they are treated as a valuable individual. We realize that the amount of time a person spends in our IOP will be relatively brief, and we want to be sure that we are helping them acquire skills that will offer long-term benefits to them. Our team understands that many people who develop mental or behavioral health disorders also struggle with shame, guilt, and other distressing emotions. We want to eliminate this type of stigma and remind each person of their inherent worth. We believe that shared support and mutual respect are fundamental principles of an effective outpatient treatment experience. They are also key components of a healthy lifestyle. Throughout a person’s time in our IOP, they can expect to be treated with respect by all members of the Erlanger team and by their fellow patients. They can also expect to be held to this same standard when interacting with others. Also, as is the case in all treatment programs at our facility, patient safety is our top priority in our IOP. The dedicated professionals who provide care here are committed to ensuring the continued well-being of all patients and staff.
