Sometimes it helps just to have a caring nonjudgmental person to talk to and bounce ideas off. Sometimes, people need a gentle push along with clear steps to take to make things better. After over 35 years working with clients from children to adult, public and private settings, I have learned what differences to respect and what common themes and needs to honor for all human beings. Throughout my career as a counselor/psychotherapist, my strength continues to be my ability to understand human nature. I share with my clients knowledge, respect, and guidance. It is a two way learning process.

I am Chris Farley, though not the former Saturday Night Live comedian famous for saying you could end up "living in a van down by the river." I still think I'm funny, but I'm actually a therapist trained in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) with 20+ years of experience working with adults, teens & families. In recent years, I have begun focusing more on using gaming and nerd culture to connect with and help clients feel accepted, developing Dungeons & Dragons Social Skills/Therapy Groups for adults and teens. If you are interested in learning more about how gaming can be used in therapy, give me a call or shoot me an email.

As humans, we experience pain, loss, or difficulties in our lives as individuals and in our family relationships. We make our best efforts to cope, adapt or resolve these trying experiences on our own. But sometimes, we get stuck or they are too great to endure alone. I believe the therapeutic relationship is a safe place, free of judgement, invested in exploring, healing, and growing. Together, we can work on the interpersonal, emotional, psychological, and spiritual issues that hinder you and your relationships from reaching full potential.

Yogi Berra was on to something when he said "“Baseball is 90 percent mental. The other half is physical." The only thing is, baseball is not the only sport that is impacted by the mental side of the game. In fact the mental component is important in anything related to performance; sports, public speaking, music, emergency-work, military, etc. As a mental performance coach, I help client's with topics including, but not limited to: confidence, anxiety, injury and return to play, stress management, communication, recruiting, relationship dynamics, relaxation, focus, and performing under pressure.

The idea of going to therapy can be daunting and challenging for many…but it doesn’t have to be. (It can actually be pretty fun!) You tell me what you want, and I do what I can to help you achieve it. Sure, there may be challenging moments because I may push you out of your comfort zone at times, but I’m great at listening and understanding what my clients want and need.

I have experience offering trauma-informed therapeutic services for survivors and alleged perpetrators. And I have offered counsel to many emerging adults struggling with fundamental childhood pain related to their upbringing and connected their experiences of racism, their ethnic origins, sexual orientation, gender identity, neurodivergence, and the many other multi-dimensional ways we can identify and be made to feel othered. As I understand trauma can be relational, as so should be healing. So where you may find value in intimate partner, familial, or group healing, I am happy to meet you and other willing participants there.

Sometimes life can feel overwhelming and disheartening. Are you struggling with negative beliefs about yourself and the world? Do you feel jumpy, on edge, and unable to focus because your thoughts are running laps inside your head? Or maybe you feel dulled, disconnected and numbed. You aren't crazy. Any and all of these are common survival responses to trauma, but maybe they hurt more than help in your everyday life. Everyone has the innate ability to heal from trauma - individual or collective, current or generational - with the right circumstances. If you're ready to take gentle and concrete steps towards healing, let's talk.

I believe that it is a privilege to share space with someone and truly connect. This is the type of relationship where healing can happen, patterns can be observed and you can be seen. I have worked for the past 20 years with woman around all types of life issues including life transitions, perinatal mood and anxiety, parenting, separating/divorcing and relationships. I believe we all deserve someone to understand us in the moments we need support. As a parent, I have personal experience with blending families and step-parenting and know the need to have a space to give voice to honest feelings, hurts and hopes.

I believe our most troubling attitudes and behavior are meant to protect us from real emotional threats or to help us achieve certain experiences that are vital to our growth. I help clients understand their experiences in the world in terms of these important functions. In dialogue with me clients come to recognize how their most important relationships have shaped the way they think, feel, and act in both desirable and undesirable ways. I strive to help clients discern their authentic needs, desires, and values so they can assert them with conviction in their daily lives.

Do you ever feel like an imposter or struggle with feelings of inadequacy? Perhaps you lean towards perfectionism and feel like nothing you ever do is quite enough. Is it sometimes hard for you to set boundaries or take care of your needs? Many people with childhood trauma grapple with these difficulties and more. It may be hard for you to feel connected with others or to shake off feelings of loneliness. Sometimes you might even feel like it's hard to enjoy the good things in your life.

Because no two patients are alike, therapy should be tailored to each patient, rather than trying to treat everyone with the same theoretical approach. I believe that a therapist’s job is to guide the patient as they learn to change the behaviors and thinking styles that may have once been helpful, but are now getting in their way. Most importantly, I believe it is a therapist's job to teach their patients the skills necessary to eventually function independent of their therapist, allowing them to eventually leave therapy instead of being stuck with having weekly sessions for the rest of their lives!

Are you going through a transition in your life? Feeling stuck and find it difficult to move forward? Many times, when things do not go as planned or the way we hope, it can feel stressful, confusing and sometimes overwhelming. I specialize in helping individuals, particularly young adults, teenagers, and school-age children, in navigating these challenging transitions (e.g., struggling in school, failure to progress in college, experiencing anxiety or depression, etc.). I work with people who need more than just “talking” with a therapist. My approach to therapy is unique.

Overwhelmed. Overstimulated. Drained. Unmotivated. Unrecognizable yet functioning. You know those feelings oh too well and at times question the point of it all. You frequently question yourself about what changes need to be made and/or how to make those changes yet you have no idea where to begin. You truly desire to live a life that excites, motivates and inspires you to be authentically yourself. You crave to know and understand "that thing" that holds you back from showing up as the version of yourself you've always wanted to be and tired of living the life that no longer suits you.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Silver Spring?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
