Signs and Symptoms of Depression

Depression is a mental health disorder that is characterized by extreme sadness and hopelessness. Much more severe and dangerous than the momentary periods of sadness that virtually all humans experience, depression is a potentially debilitating disorder that, if left untreated, can have a significant negative impact on a person's ability to function. In addition to sadness and hopelessness, other common symptoms of depression include loss of appetite, withdrawal from friends and family, loss of interest in issues or events that were previously important, fatigue, problems concentrating or focusing, and suicidal ideation. The general term depression actually encompasses several distinct types of the disorder. Two of the most common forms of depression are major depression, which manifests as an intense onset of symptoms for a period of at least two weeks, and persistent depressive disorder, formerly known as dysthymia, characterized by less intense symptoms that last for months or years.
