Signs and Symptoms of Substance Abuse
An addiction to drugs and/or alcohol can take a toll on every area of an individual's life if treatment is not sought. Proper treatment can help individuals struggling with chemical dependency issues regain control over their lives and reduce the risk of overdose and death. Identifying the signs and symptoms of substance abuse is imperative in determining the most effective treatment. Depending on the substance that is being abused, the signs and symptoms can vary. Individuals who continue to abuse drugs or alcohol despite consequences that occur, who fail to fulfill roles or responsibilities, who suddenly present with behaviors that seem grossly out of character, or those who display drastic shifts in mood for seemingly no reason may be struggling with a substance abuse issue. Additionally, addicts may socially withdraw, have impaired cognitive functioning, or have changes in their eating habits or sleep patterns. If you, a friend, or loved one presents with these signs and symptoms, it is important to know that help is available and successful recovery is possible.
