Benefits of Medication-Assisted Treatment
The opioid crisis continues to devastate individuals and families across the nation, and far too many people have lost their lives to an overdose. Bangor Comprehensive Treatment Center (CTC) helps adults overcome addictions to opioids like prescription painkillers and heroin by using a specialized approach called medication-assisted treatment (MAT). This research-backed method addresses opioid addiction from a holistic standpoint through a combination of prescription medications and counseling. The medication portion of MAT addresses the physical aspects of addiction by easing opioid cravings and withdrawal symptoms. This can allow a person to function better because they’re no longer under the influence of opioids, so they may be able to drive, work, and be more social again. The counseling aspect of MAT takes this a step further by addressing the emotional and behavioral aspects of addiction. In counseling sessions, participants can make behavior and lifestyle changes that are crucial to recovery. The combination of medication and counseling can be powerful, leading many people to achieve lasting sobriety.
What to Expect
The recovery process is different for everyone, which is why it’s important that you receive personalized care. Before starting treatment at Bangor CTC, you can expect our staff to thoroughly assess your needs. Our team will conduct a physical exam, and they’ll talk to you about your medical history, any treatment you’ve received in the past, your opioid use history, and your expectations for the time you spend with us. After completing this process, you may receive a prescription for a medication like methadone or Suboxone. While both medications support the recovery process, they each work a bit differently. We’ll work closely with you to determine the right medication and dosage. To complement medication, we’ll also outline the therapies that will offer you the best chance for success. We mainly use group therapy, with discussion topics customized to address each person’s specific circumstances. You may also meet individually with a counselor if your care team recommends this service. We’ll adjust your medication and care plan as needed to keep you on track to meet your recovery goals.
