BALANCE eating disorder treatment center

BALANCE serves all gender adolescents and adults and offers counseling and support to families and loved ones. Treatment focus: anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, disordered eating and other food & body image concerns. The BALANCE dietetic team customizes meal planning and supports Kosher, Halal, vegetarian, vegan, dairy free, celiac accommodations/gluten-free, allergies and food sensitivities.

BALANCE eating disorder treatment center is an outpatient program centrally located in Manhattan's Flatiron District in New York City. We are situated in a beautiful open space that creates a serene, soothing environment in keeping with our objective to provide a therapeutic milieu. BALANCE was founded by Melainie Rogers, MS, RDN, CDN, CEDRD-S, an international expert in the treatment of eating disorders. Our integrative, multidisciplinary treatment model incorporates psycho-dynamically informed psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral treatment, DBT, creative & expressive therapies including art therapy, drama, and movement therapy, yoga, experiential therapy, family therapy. Our nutritional philosophy employs an intuitive eating model in which clients learn to recognize their own internal cues of hunger and satiety and develop a "neutral" relationship with food. We support a Health at Every Size (HAES) treatment model. BALANCE is proud to offer the smallest, most intimate group setting for eating disorder treatment in New York City. At BALANCE, we understand that each client is unique and responds to treatment differently. We seek to customize treatment for each individual.

*Note: BALANCE is offering all programs & groups on virtual platforms during the COVID19 crisis. Our treatment services include an adult day treatment program (M-F), an evening intensive outpatient program (3 evenings a week), a Saturday weekend program, a teen after-school program, nutritional counseling & meal support, cooking class, family therapy, multi-family group, individual counseling and various groups including a men's group, body image group, women's emotional eating group, Coping for College recovery group for university students, Supporting a Loved One group for families & partners, a performing artists group, and a Relapse Recovery ongoing therapy group. A free monthly Contemplating Recovery group is available to those seeking treatment options for the first time and additionally an alumni recovery support group is offered to those who have completed treatment at BALANCE. Eating Disorder Anonymous (EDA) groups are also hosted twice a week on site at our center.

Relapse Prevention Group

This mixed gender therapy group offers consistent weekly support for clients in early recovery who are either stepping down from a higher level of care or would benefit from complementary care in addition to their outpatient team. The group integrates essential recovery tools, including DBT and CBT skills with weekly goal-setting, in order to prevent re-occurrence of symptoms and to support the client in sustaining recovery. The composition of the group embraces all eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder and provides an opportunity for peer support.

Men's group

Co-lead by a licensed clinical social worker and a registered dietician with an expertise in eating disorders. The Men's Group provides a unique, safe and supportive space for men to examine their relationships with body, food, self, and society.The group focuses on body image concerns, healthy exercising, emotional eating, relationship issues, nutrition, communication and coping skills.

Body Image Group

Members will gain insight into the relationship with one's body & how eating disorder behaviors are often a result of the way in which emotions manifest in one's physical body. Members will gain support around practicing emotional regulation & self-compassion when going through a therapeutic process. The group will foster understanding about how poor body image, lack of sense of self & low self-esteem impact our identity. Monthly group nutritional sessions will provide education about food neutrality, debunking food myths, & encourage clients to not allow body image to control our way of being in this world.
