Medication-assisted treatment, or MAT, is a time-tested method that uses both medication and counseling to help adults achieve recovery from alcohol or opioid addiction. Years of research has shown that people who take part in MAT are more likely to remain in treatment and less likely to relapse. Contrary to popular belief, MAT doesn’t involve swapping one drug for another. When taken as directed, MAT medications can help people stop abusing certain substances and may ease distressing cravings and painful withdrawal symptoms.
