When someone is suffering from a substance use disorder, the thought of going through the withdrawal process can be scary and intimidating.
At Riverview Behavioral Health, we strive to be a vital resource for people who have mental health and co-occurring addiction concerns. And we make it our priority to help each patient achieve their treatment goals and take steps toward a healthier future. During your time in our detox program, you will receive support from our staff to maintain your health and promote your physical well-being, and you may also participate in therapeutic programming if it is appropriate for your needs. We may offer a range of therapeutic resources for patients, including individual and group therapy sessions. At all times, you will follow an individualized treatment plan, which your care team will customize to your needs and adjust as needed throughout your stay. When you are ready to transition out of our detox program and on to the next phase of your recovery journey, our experts will recommend resources and treatment services that can support your continued success. Aftercare referrals for someone who has completed our detox program may include outpatient therapy, substance abuse counseling, or residential treatment services.

Riverview Behavioral Health is a leading provider of inpatient behavioral health treatment for adults. We provide expert care and support for adults age 18 and older who have mental health concerns like depression, anxiety disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and schizophrenia. We also serve those who are also struggling with co-occurring addictions to substances like alcohol, benzodiazepines, and opioids. Our adult inpatient unit can support people at a variety of life stages, including senior adults who are able to participate in and benefit from the treatment services we provide. At our hospital, inpatient care is typically a short-term experience that can help people stabilize and address crisis symptoms before transitioning to a less intensive level of care. Although each person has unique needs and heals at their own pace, the typical length of stay for adults in our inpatient program is about seven to 10 days. To promote the best treatment outcomes, seniors who participate in our adult inpatient program usually remain in care for slightly longer.

Substance Use Treatment Centers
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
