ADHD diagnosis and treatment in New York City
ADHD has become a widely recognized challenge that can be treated medically as well as non-medically. Depending on the child or adult and their specific circumstances and needs, we can help. To assess and diagnose, we have experienced psychiatrists and psychologists on staff. Once diagnosed, if medication is warranted as a part of the treatment plan, the psychiatrist would continue in his/her role as the prescribing physician. He/she would communicate with the other clinicians in the center who, as part of the treatment team, would have non-medical roles in the effective treatment of ADHD and its associated conditions. Testing to assess if extra time on tests is needed
Although ADHD is generally first noticed in young children around the age of 6 or 7, as school becomes harder, some children, "fly under the radar." That is, they may under perform throughout their academic career but because their problem is inattention without hyperactivity, they pass through undiagnosed. Then, when those children start to demonstrate difficulties in high school, they are found to have ADHD (inattentive type). Standardized tests like the SATs require not only a doctor's note but also extensive psychological testing to substantiate that extra time is needed. We have psychologists who perform comprehensive evaluations and are able to help. In addition, we also have psychologists who can do testing and assessment that can provide evidence or documentation that extra time is needed for other standardized tests, i.e. the LSAT, GMAT, GRE and MCAT. Non-medical options for treating ADHD
Besides psychiatrists that can treat ADHD medically, other treatment options can be useful. We have the following specialists that can help: 1. a psychologist who can treat associated problems, i.e. anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, family problems, and issues that can co-exist with ADHD or can be exacerbated by it. 2. a nutritionist to review diet and how that can be altered to improve focusing and other issues. 3. a life coach to help work on day to day organizational skills and a 4. mindfulness instructor to help if needed. 5. Family therapy to work on associated issues if necessary. 6. Group therapy to work on social skills if those are affected. 7. Family support groups 8. Tutoring 9. a social worker to help families find the right school to fit the right child. 10. Art therapy for those children who communicate better through this modality.
