Signs and Symptoms of Substance Abuse

While it is not uncommon for individuals who are abusing drugs or alcohol to go to great lengths to keep their use a secret, there are some warning signs that may become apparent as their use continues to increase. People who chronically abuse substances are likely to start having difficulty in taking care of daily tasks or fulfilling their responsibilities. They may begin to have frequent absences from work or school, they may start to isolate themselves from family and friends, and they may no longer show an interest in things that they used to be interested in. Using drugs and alcohol can also cause people to experience dramatic mood swings, causing them to become more irritable, short-tempered, or aggressive than they would be if they were not using substances. These individuals may also display changes in appearance, become unreasonably paranoid, and suffer from significant memory impairment, amongst many other negative symptoms. The signs that may indicate that a person is abusing substances will vary greatly depending on the type of substance being abused, but all will eventually create disturbances in some, if not all, areas of an individual's life.
