For more than 20 years, Burkwood Treatment Center has specialized in providing effective, comprehensive care for adult men and women, ages 18 and above, who are struggling with alcoholism, chemical dependency, and some co-occurring disorders. Located at the end of a quiet street in picturesque Hudson, Wisconsin, Burkwood is a place of hope and healing, where men and women in crisis receive life-changing care in a nurturing environment that is conducive to spiritual enrichment and emotional growth. When a man or woman enters treatment at Burkwood, he or she is never in danger of becoming "just another patient." Instead, all who choose to heal with us have the opportunity to work in active partnership with the members of their treatment team to develop personalized treatment plans that are specifically customized to help them achieve their unique recovery goals. At Burkwood Treatment Center, we understand that chemical dependency is a chronic, progressive disease that can be diagnosed and treated, and we believe that abstinence is the beginning of permanent recovery. Our treatment is based upon the philosophy that self-defeating behaviors can be replaced with healthy habits, and that accepting personal responsibility is a key to lasting sobriety.
The Importance of Substance Abuse Treatment
Substance abuse and chemical dependency are complex issues that can be virtually impossible to overcome without receiving comprehensive care at a residential treatment program. Addiction is a chronic, progressive disease that is often accompanied by co-occurring mental health disorders that can further complicate the treatment process. However, with effective professional intervention, afflicted individuals can learn to manage their compulsions and make the changes that will support long-term recovery. Cognitive behavioral therapy and the principles of the 12-step recovery model have helped many individuals live sober lives, yet no single treatment intervention will be effective for all cases of chemical dependency. For this reason, quality residential treatment programs employ a variety of therapeutic modalities, including individual, group, family, and experiential therapies. Depending upon the nature and severity of an individual's substance abuse problem and the presence of any co-occurring disorders, prescription medications may be incorporated into treatment. Because recovery is a lifelong process, relapse prevention training, participation in support groups, and the development of long-term continuing care plans are essential elements of an effective residential treatment experience.
Treatment Options at Burkwood Treatment Center
Treatment at Burkwood Treatment Center is provided by multidisciplinary teams of dedicated and experienced professionals, including counselors who are specifically trained in chemical dependency and mental health, a psychiatrist, a registered nurse, and other licensed professionals. A typical treatment week at Burkwood features a variety of therapeutic experiences, including group therapy, individual counseling, community support meetings, several specialty modalities, and both on- and off-campus recovery groups. We endorse the 12-step recovery model, but we do not rely on it as the sole means of achieving recovery. At Burkwood, all care is personalized in order to maximize our clients' strengths and to meet their unique needs. By the time our clients have completed residential treatment, they will have developed comprehensive continuing care plans to ensure that they have the structure and support that they need to maintain and build upon the progress that they have made while in treatment. Burkwood staff members work with all clients to identify their continuing care options and select the resources that will enhance their recovery. These options may include referrals to halfway houses, sober housing, community support, outpatient counseling, and psychiatric and medical support as needed.
