The Psychiatry High Risk Program is an innovative, recovery-based, and nationally recognized outpatient program for youth and young adults (ages 14 to 40) who struggle with thoughts of suicide. Suicide is a response to feeling stuck alone with overwhelming pain. Suicidal individuals have difficulty adaptively processing emotionally painful experiences and forming authentic and fulfilling relationships. Neuroimaging studies indicate that the emotion processing system in the brain is underdeveloped and not functioning well in those individuals, causing deficits in self capacities, such as a capacity to self-soothe, as well as hyperarousal and increased vulnerability to stress. When these deficits are combined with an inner sense of badness, disconnection, and alienation, the risk of suicide goes up. Dynamic Deconstructive Psychotherapy (DDP) is a core required component, with medication management, family therapy and group therapies offered as needed. DDP aims to repair the emotion processing system, helping clients to connect with and process emotionally-laden experiences in new ways. DDP also fosters authentic and fulfilling connections with others and helps clients to work towards self-acceptance and self-compassion. Studies of DDP have demonstrated long-lasting improvements in depression, addictions, relationships, and suicide-related behaviors. How do I get started?
The first step is the biggest. That first step is simply to pick up the phone and call the intake number. A friendly intake coordinator will return your call, answer any questions, check your insurance plan, and send you out a packet to complete. Once the packet is filled out and sent back to the program, you will be given the opportunity to have consultation meetings with an expert psychiatric practitioner, who will let you know their impressions, address your questions and concerns, and see if the program is a good fit for you. You will then be scheduled for an intake appointment with a therapist, and you are on your way! Change is always difficult and recovery involves totally changing your basic coping style and ways of relating to yourself and others.
