I am a WV native and have been working with children/adolescents/adults for over 17 years. Helping others is my passion. I am an advocate for the families receiving my services. I am a graduate of West Virginia State University with a B.A. in Psychology and Liberty University with an M.A. Professional Counseling. I am trained in EMDR therapy, which is a model of therapy used to treat trauma and other disorders. I am currently taking courses in American Sign Language and hope to eventually offer services to the deaf community. If I may leave one thought with you it is that what I do is a PASSION and not a POSITION. Take care

More than anything we want to be loved, accepted and have meaningful relationships. Having people we can rely on, trust and enjoy life with gives us joy, purpose and the support we need to be ourselves and get through life's challenges. Finding and having meaningful relationships, however, can be challenging. Whether you are ending a relationship, starting a new one or have been hurt by someone you are close to, it can be scary to deal with the pain, start over or know how to be yourself. In some cases, we may even feel lost, need help healing, coping or rediscovering what makes us us and what makes us happy.

Does your child struggle with self esteem? Anxiety? Depression? Does your child struggle to communicate their feelings? Do they often put themselves down? Have outbursts of anger or aggression? Do they struggle when knowing how to calm themselves down? If you answered yes to any of those questions, then you have come to the right place. Play Therapy is a great place to start! Play Therapy uses play to build connection and establish a positive relationship. Once this has been achieved, a child can begin to identify their issues though play and begin healing.

Do you feel stuck in the past? Do you feel like it’s hard to let something or someone go? Do you feel indecisive and unsure what decision to make next? Trauma doesn’t need to control you forever or impact your present life. Therapy can help you get unstuck and feel more at peace. Therapy with me feels comfortable like you’re talking to a friend, but it’s so much more helpful than that. I will listen to you without judgement and help you work through your trauma and icky feelings about yourself. You logically know what happened to you wasn’t your fault, but together we will help your heart truly believe that.

I am here to help you heal the distress you are feeling coming from anxiety, depression addiction, trauma, PTSD or family problems. It can be hard to connect with a therapist at first. You don't know this person and how are you going to feel trusting and secure with a stranger? Yet you are in pain and need help. It is just a first step, one that does not have to lead to commitment. You are in charge and are simply "auditioning" to see if this connection feels good and helpful.

My ideal client is someone who is active in their own treatment. I enjoy working with clients who have a vision for how they want their life to look and are willing to take concrete steps to bring that vision to life. This client understands that therapy for one hour a week is only a fraction of the healing process. I take a holistic approach, addressing both the body's and the mind's roles in shaping our mental health. My goal is to help clients better control their body's response to trauma/stress, while also exploring and processing the emotions underneath.

You knew that marriage was going to be hard, but this is ridiculous! It’s not supposed to be THIS hard. There’s just too much bickering, irritability, and frustration. And when you fight—all bets are off and anything goes. It takes days to recover. You wanted a relationship that eased your burdens, not make life more complicated. You worry that you will stop liking each other. And you will lose the love. But deep down, you really want this to work. You want a closer, deeper relationship. There's hope: you don't have to live this way. You CAN have a great relationship. Now offering sex therapy.

When the pain from prior wounds causes you to feel crushed by low self-esteem or battered by a critical inner voice, it can be hard to find that spark of hope. My clients come to me carrying heavy burdens of depression or trauma and may be exhausted by the constant vigilance of anxiety. I work with people who are striving to find balance when life experiences have done damage in deep or lasting ways. Whether you are struggling with unhealthy relationships, reactive emotional patterns, or defense strategies that are causing more harm than good, I would love to work with you to find healing and growth.

My passion is helping women to regain a feeling of control and authorship in their lives. Too often as women, we expend so much energy trying to be the best worker/mother/partner we can be and end up putting our own needs at the bottom of the list. We may struggle with disempowering beliefs about ourself that we can't seem to break free from that undercut our true value and worth. We typically only come to therapy if we're hurting a great deal; though choosing to directly confront and sit with our pain can be difficult, it also has the potential to be truly transformative!

I love helping clients to connect with their authentic selves and strengthen their relationships. I work from a framework that explores the ways that early experiences can shape current patterns of relating. My work is also guided by the understanding that many clients' difficulties are impacted by systems of oppression such as racism, transphobia, homophobia, and gender discrimination. Most importantly, this space centers on you and what you're bringing into it; I'm not here to judge, criticize, or fix you, but instead support you in learning about your own internal world.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in South Charleston?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
