I also integrate emotional intelligence and mindfulness and acceptance-based principles into my work to help you change your relationship with your thoughts and emotions and make choices that are consistent with what is most important to you.
My goals are to support you in developing life-enhancing emotions such as self-compassion, humor, and gratitude while also learning how to relate to all emotions as fleeting; as messengers of our experiences. This ultimately helps you relate differently to stress, fear, and anxiety, empathize with others, communicate more effectively, and build healthier relationships. When we can learn to honor our internal experiences, relate to our emotions in a non-judgmental way, and treat ourselves with compassion, we can begin to create change and build meaningful lives for ourselves.

I also practice cognitive behavioral therapy, trauma-focused CBT, couples therapy, mindfulness , and a wellness approach.
I provide a safe and compassionate space where clients can be themselves and truly share their story with me. We all have unhelpful thoughts/coping strategies/emotional patterns that we pick up along the way that may have helped us adapt in the past but have kept us from growing. I utilize my client’s strengths to help them find their voice and empower them to make the changes to achieve the life they want. I have years of experience in helping people with anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, relationship issues as well as everyday life stressors and challenges.

So, some time will be spent practicing coping: breathing, relaxation, mindfulness , and distraction.
Congratulations on taking this step to work on improving your life/situation. That is a huge step and one that will be honored if you choose to work with me. I see therapy as helping people to change, not changing people. I am a client-centered therapist with over 25 years working in mental health. I have seen such a wide brush-stroke of peoples' experiences, nothing is any longer unbelievable, nor open to my judgment. These experiences include: inpatient care, high school and university educational counseling, and community-based care. My clients experiences define the concept of diversity.

I am well versed in techniques associated with evidenced-based approaches that are client-centered, strengths-based and self-determined utilizing techniques, knowledge, and skills from Trauma-Informed Practice, CBT, IFS, SFBT, Mindfulness Based & Somatic Therapies, Healing & Expressive Arts Therapies (art, music poetry, creative writing, play etc) .
I strongly believe that everyone is unique and everyone’s story is unique; therefore, different approaches are essential in working with a wide variety of people. I am a true believer in the concept of “words shape beliefs” and, in that vein, saying “I do not know” or “please help” are powerful words since vulnerability often leads to growth and healing. One of my favorite quotes is by Viktor Frankl who said "When we are no longer able to change a situation - we are challenged to change ourselves."

Often we don’t know what's possible to achieve in therapy, we only know what we're used to. Frequently, we also don't believe things can be any different, and if we do, we don't know how to get there. I'll work with you to create a practical vision of how life can be for you, and a detailed plan for how to achieve it. We focus on coping skills and the ability to calm and regulate your emotions. From there, deeper change can occur, allowing you to release the effects of the past, change your beliefs about yourself and move into greater self-acceptance. Lastly, we focus on integrating your definition of thriving, not just surviving.

Emotional and behavioral challenges in childhood and adolescence affects the child and rest of the family unit as well. Caregivers often find themselves heartbroken while they watch their child struggle through issues they wish they could take away, and if the child is acting out behaviorally, it is common for caregivers to even feel hurt and confused. I offer therapy services for children ages 3 and up, as well as adults and families for the diagnosis and treatment of emotional, relational, and behavioral concerns, as well as offer support services and psychoeducation to their caregivers and other family members.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
