My approach in counseling is somewhat holistic and eclectic. I believe a supportive counseling environment works to help a client achieve awareness, thus leading to healing and personal growth. My role is to help clients explore their emotional needs and provide feedback. Hopefully, the value will be realized in both behavioral and emotional changes. Under all circumstances, my mission is to treat the client with the utmost regard and honor the human condition as it is. Counseling hours are available most days at your convenience. Often clients are able to schedule an appointment with 24 hours of calling my office.

You may look “fine” on the outside, but inside your nervous system feels like it is always on duty. You might be carrying trauma from sexual abuse, feeling anxious, numb, on edge, or stuck in patterns you cannot explain. Maybe sleep is light, your patience is thin, and your mind will not shut off. You may be navigating pregnancy, postpartum, or grief after loss, or trying to support a partner while you are falling apart too. You want relief, steadiness, and practical tools, plus a safe place to rebuild boundaries, self-trust, and a life that feels like yours again.

Most people are Inherently "good," try to act this way, and don't know why this does not result in success, happiness. We will work to learn what interferes: Learning, health, life-stages, guilt, genetics, self-sabotage, traumas. You will make changes to free yourself from the past, so that future choices DO result in success, joy, peace. Since toddlers, we seek to be accepted, be useful; aware of this, you can meet your goals. Seeking help is bravely taking a risk, understandably causing many to be anxious at the 1st session. We'll work at YOUR pace. FOR FAST REPLY: swadams200[AT].com.

Therapy is an incredibly vulnerable process that involves stripping down the emotional armor we have collected over years of struggle, insecurity, or fear. For some the idea of therapy feels like the sweetest release and for others this idea feels incredibly intimidating. Often times, individuals present for their first sessions after an acute stressor, a period of prolonged distress, or even a previously failed treatment. Regardless of the precipitating factor, people often enter therapy when they feel hurt and alone. Many come with bruised hearts and tired souls, uncertain of what their struggles mean about their ability to heal.

You’ve spent so much of your life trying to outrun what happened to you as a child, yet the past still shows up in ways you wish it wouldn’t. You carry memories you never asked for, and even years later, they echo through your relationships, reactions, and how you see yourself. Trust feels risky. Connection feels uncertain. And whenever conflict, misunderstanding, or closeness appears, something inside you tightens, like you’re bracing to be hurt or abandoned. You swing between feeling too much and feeling nothing at all – never quite sure where you fit or how to feel safe. You’re tired of feeling stuck and lost.

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.

How is counseling for seniors and the elderly different from counseling for other age groups?
In general, counseling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialize in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counseling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counselors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counselors specializing in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counselors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
