We may work on thoughts and habits (CBT), coping and emotion skills ( DBT), motivation for change (MI), and relationship patterns from your past (attachment).
You may look “fine” on the outside, but inside your nervous system feels like it is always on duty. You might be carrying trauma from sexual abuse, feeling anxious, numb, on edge, or stuck in patterns you cannot explain. Maybe sleep is light, your patience is thin, and your mind will not shut off. You may be navigating pregnancy, postpartum, or grief after loss, or trying to support a partner while you are falling apart too. You want relief, steadiness, and practical tools, plus a safe place to rebuild boundaries, self-trust, and a life that feels like yours again.

I believe your mental health is the most important thing you can take care of when it comes to your well-being. I understand it can be intimidating on how and where to start. The mind is complex, my mission is to help you better understand yourself and to see your life in a more meaningful way. I work with clients who are struggling with depression, anxiety, and trauma. As well as those battling substance use disorders. As a foster and adoptive parent, I enjoy working with those who have been adopted or have navigated the foster care system. You may be high-functioning on the outside but feel exhausted, anxious, or disconnected on the inside. You’re tired of living in survival mode and want to feel more at home in your body, your relationships, and your life. I work especially well with clients who understand their trauma intellectually but still feel stuck emotionally or physically. Together, we explore healing through a mind–body lens, recognizing that the nervous system seeks safety before growth. Your symptoms once protected you—now it’s time to help your body learn that safety can exist in the present.

Hello! I’m Carolyn, a licensed independent clinical social worker practicing in West Virginia since 2019. I strive to create a comfortable, supportive, and empowering environment for clients to be able to open up and feel a connection. I understand the difficulty of admitting that you need to discuss concerns with someone outside of your support system, therefore I prioritize practicing with warmth and compassion while utilizing a strengths-based approach to best fit the needs of my clients. I have worked with individuals of all ages, and currently I am providing individual therapy services to clients who are ages 12 and up.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists
Who is DBT for?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?
The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?
Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?
Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
