What would "Happier" look like? - It sounds great... but where do you start? It can feel so overwhelming, but what if we can work on that together. Let's create a vision. Let's figure out what's getting in the way, then build the plan to empower YOU to (1) use the strengths you already have as the foundation to (2) build the skills you need, to (3) make the changes to reach your goals. It CAN happen. It can be YOU.

I'm looking for clients that are thinking about making change or are already ready. Navigating the process of change is often difficult. Whether the change you are considering is in the area of substance use, mental health, or relationships with family / significant others, it can be very useful to have an ally to assist in navigating that process. I've been working in the fields of substance use and mental health for 20 years. I've worked extensively with both adolescents and adults. My approach in counseling is eclectic. I incorporate elements of Motivational Interviewing, Reality Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

“Midway along the journey of our life I woke to find myself in a dark wood, for I had wandered off from the straight path." This sentence encapsulates the feelings many clients bring to therapy, the culmination of years of existential angst, an accumulation of guilt, anxiety, loss, among a myriad of other experiences which have inflicted pain and suffering. My experience working with clients in exploring their unique symptoms, be it depression, anxiety, etc., is to not rush headlong into an immediate remedy of the symptoms, rather the exploration of how these symptoms may be trying to inform in new ways of approaching life.

We are a group of compassionate counselors who offer research supported, brain-based, integrative treatment to those who are hurting. Since different parts of the brain are in charge based on stress levels, treatments are most effective when matched with the part of the brain that is in charge in the moment.

I believe your mental health is the most important thing you can take care of when it comes to your well-being. I understand it can be intimidating on how and where to start. The mind is complex, my mission is to help you better understand yourself and to see your life in a more meaningful way. I work with clients who are struggling with depression, anxiety, and trauma. As well as those battling substance use disorders. As a foster and adoptive parent, I enjoy working with those who have been adopted or have navigated the foster care system. I have primarily worked with teens, young adults, adults, and couples.

Most people are Inherently "good," try to act this way, and don't know why this does not result in success, happiness. We will work to learn what interferes: Learning, health, life-stages, guilt, genetics, self-sabotage, traumas. You will make changes to free yourself from the past, so that future choices DO result in success, joy, peace. Since toddlers, we seek to be accepted, be useful; aware of this, you can meet your goals. Seeking help is bravely taking a risk, understandably causing many to be anxious at the 1st session. We'll work at YOUR pace. FOR FAST REPLY: swadams200[AT].com.

In this life, we are all faced with struggles. Whether that is a stressful life transition, not feeling good enough, divorce, worry about the future, grief, feeling burnt out by the demands of work, school, relationships, or daily life or managing high sensitivity. We can overcome these struggles with non-judgmental support, coping tools, life strategies, and self-awareness. I believe that anyone can go on a journey of self-healing and discovery that will encourage growth and increase their quality of life. Taking the first step can be tough, but counseling can provide a space where you don’t have to do it alone.

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
