Highmark Therapists in Harpers Ferry, WV
My goal as a therapist is to help clients who are having difficulty in our fast-paced environment dealing with life’s stressors related to marriages/partnerships, families, friendships, social isolation, employment and finances. I provide a safe place where clients know they can share in a confidential environment without judgment. All of us have negative thoughts. Realizing that we are more than our thoughts, though, can be truly liberating and allow a person to live a full and meaningful life, even when faced with struggles that may seem impossible to overcome.

Many clients come to therapy feeling exhausted from trying to hold everything together on their own or feeling misunderstood in past relationships or therapeutic experiences. I work best with individuals who feel emotions deeply and want to better understand and manage their internal experiences rather than avoid them. If you are insightful and self-aware, but still find yourself repeating patterns you wish you could change, we can work together to get out of emotional cycles, build fulfilling connections with others, and develop a strong sense of self.

We offer a variety of techniques to guide you into creating a pathway to healing and a direction that feels increasingly aligned with your own sense of inner core purpose. Over the years of counseling others, I have developed a specialty in working with depression, codependency issues, dual diagnosis & survivors of abuse. Since relocating to the area in 1999, I have been focusing on working with individuals, families, couples and groups. I lead two therapeutic support groups for women. I am also a dance/movement therapist offering a creative alternative on the therapeutic path.

The process of asking for help can be truly challenging. Sometimes it’s difficult asking a simple request, and even more difficult to ask someone to listen to you when you’re stressed, scared, angry, or sad. Therapy can be a step in improving relationships with yourself, and to help you know your feelings and experiences are valid. A lot of life is adapting to our environments, often to keep ourselves safe, but sometimes those learned behaviors have long-term effects on our ability to understand our needs and others.

Time for a new approach? An integrated approach of LENS Neurotherapy, EMDR and "talk" therapy has resulted in rapid improvements for client mood & overall health. LENS (Low Energy Neurofeedback System) "reboots" suppressed areas of the brain impacted by emotional trauma, concussion, illness, toxins/meds... with applications typically lasting seconds to a few minutes. Michael has offered EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) therapy since 2001, effective for resolving emotional trauma & targeting "stuck" thinking patterns. Changes occur through the "safe space" of the therapeutic relationship & brain-based interventions.

Through supportive connection and partnership, I believe recovery is possible; and I am enthusiastic about being a part of that process. Having graduated from Shippensburg University with a BA in Psychology, I obtained my Masters in Social Work after working in the mental health field for over a decade. My experience includes working through symptoms of trauma, anxiety, schizophrenia, depression, bipolar, and other mood disorders. I passionately serve folks on the autism spectrum, and in the LGBTQ+ and aging populations. I also recognize and enjoy the challenges that come with working with diverse populations.

Anxiety has a way of quietly running the show. Your mind stays busy, replaying conversations, second-guessing decisions, and worrying about getting things wrong. Small moments- a change in routine, a tone of voice, a hard day - can trigger overwhelm, self-doubt, or a drop in confidence. You may notice this pattern in yourself, in your child, or both. You try to stay calm and do the "right" thing, yet still feel unsure of what's normal, what's developmental, and how to respond in ways that actually help. Communication often feels reactive or second-guessed. It's exhausting to carry this much and still try to stay steady.

It can be difficult to reach out for help and even more difficult to admit that you could use some guidance. When you are struggling, having someone in your corner to help you overcome the hurdles in your journey can be helpful. I take a holistic approach, focusing on the symptoms you identify and how they affect you in all areas of your life. We will work as a team to figure out the root cause and find the healthiest ways to cope. The treatment plan will be individualized to YOU, as no two people are exactly the same. Much of our work together will focus on how your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors interact with one another.

I work with women in early adulthood who are navigating major life transitions while developing a clearer sense of self. Many notice a constant hum of anxiety, getting stuck in looping thoughts, or having intense reactions to seemingly small events, leaving themselves tense, restless, or unsure how to respond. Anxiety, perfectionism, attentional or executive function differences, and early childhood experiences can all add to these overwhelming feelings; we can work together to manage them.
