Your anxiety is at an all time high. There are so many layers to it, so much stress, it's hard to concentrate. You may be using substances more to help forget about it all. Your anxiety leads to sadness, or frustration, or anger and it is relentless. If only there was a way to turn off all of the thoughts. It's affecting your relationships, your sleep, and your happiness. You may be thinking that you need to make changes, but you put it off until the next day, and then the next.

The two populations I work the most with are moms trying to find the balance in their lives, and the LGBTQ+ population. I am a single mom of a young child with disabilities, and love working with other moms and talking through the challenges that moms face. As a member of and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, I understand the unique struggles that members of the community face regarding coming out, family complications, self-acceptance, and other issues. I help my clients to navigate these issues, and to live their best life possible.

You've tried the diets. You've read the self-help books. You've scoured TikTok and Instagram for answers. But, you just haven't been able to find your way out of dieting cycles, binge eating and harsh self-talk that leaves you feeling defeated and like you'll never feel normal around food or your body. I want you to know that healing is possible. That you can relearn how to trust your body and that you can heal from years of shame, blame, trauma and disconnection from yourself.

I specialize in working with adolescents and adults who are struggling with all forms of eating disorders and disordered eating. Clients who come to see me may have just been diagnosed with an eating disorder or have been struggling for years. Clients often reach out to me because they know that I practice from a Health at Every Size(R) framework and they want treatment that is not stigmatizing about weight. Adolescent clients and their families often seek me out because of my expertise doing Family Based Treatment.

I work with all gender clients, 13yrs and up. As men and women, young and old, we are multitaskers, we take care of others while neglecting ourselves. Self-care-self-love is foreign. Many self-medicate with food, alcohol, pills, shopping, social media, relationships, the list can go on. This creates a cycle of shame, remorse, and regret. We realize- I am not happy-how come? The people I work with are trying to answer that question. They are looking for someone else or something else to make them happy. An external fix/distraction to avoid feeling upset. And yet the outcome continues to be is anxiety, depression, substance abuse

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
