Sometimes, as humans, we get wounded in ways that are so deep, they are difficult to name. Perhaps you have lost loved ones along the way, or can't find meaning in your story. Have you ever inventoried your life to discover that it is not what you want it to be? Do you feel haunted by memories? Maybe you engage in self-destructive or numbing behaviors that you wish you could change, but find that making those changes is easier said than done. My goal is to create a trustworthy space where we can work through whatever it is you bring in, on your search for healing, fulfillment, and wholeness.

We treat symptoms of depression, anxiety, trauma, and disorder, etc. from an intention to alleviate or change. This may bring temporary relief but it dismisses the wisdom of these internal states. When we can connect to our whole experience, we learn to be with all aspects of ourselves in a way that naturally brings a sense of aliveness to the vast experience of being human. This aliveness shows us who we are, how to be, and in what way to be of service to the world. It is a guide for meaning and beauty, showing us how to heal and remember what truly provides a sense of well being for our lives.

If you are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, uncertain, or just plain stuck, you do not have to go it alone. I work with individuals and couples who are doing their best to navigate life's difficulties, but need some extra support to get through their current challenges. I offer a safe, nonjudgmental space to explore what is causing you to feel stuck and what would help you become "unstuck." I trust people’s inherent strength, and ability to bounce back from way more than we might imagine possible. I see myself as a supportive guide, facilitating a process of self inquiry, creating shared meaning, and making needed changes in life.

We all look for empathy, understanding, and connection in our lives and relationships. When moving through the world with a non-dominant identity, it can be difficult to find acceptance, confidence and a sense of belonging. As a biracial Chamoru woman, I have been navigating these struggles throughout my life. I hope to work with others who are looking to cultivate relationships with their core identities, while navigating the challenges related to systems of oppression. My clients often identify as people of color, LGBTQ+, disabled, and/or chronically ill, as well as part of nerd, geek or techie communities.

Anxiety, trauma, feelings of worthlessness, depression and a host of other health and mental health challenges peel away at our ability to connect with others. It leaves us feeling alone, lost, powerless and hopeless. Studies have shown that the power of connection is an essential component to a long and meaningful life. So many times, our fears and thoughts that we are not enough, we will be rejected, and that we are invisible trap us in internal suffering. It can feel like we are watching life happen around us from behind a glass window, longing to join but with no way of breaking through.

Life can be hard, can cause twists, turns, and sometimes unexpected trauma happens to us or those we love. This can include grief and loss, particularly painful when it involves loss of a child or fertility loss. That is where good therapy is key to relieving the pain and understanding how to process such abstract emotions that often consume our entirety. I specialize in helping adults navigate such hurtles, particularly those attached to fertility related trauma, infant loss/miscarriage, traumatic births, postpartum depression/anxiety and bereavement. I welcome all those who seek support; therapy is hard, but you are here.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
