I work with all mental health and stress-related issues including life transitions, relationship issues, mood and anxiety disorders, women's issues, and grief.
I specialize in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a mindfulness-based behavior therapy that focuses on helping clients live fulfilling and meaningful lives even with the struggles of everyday life. I offer a collaborative approach that helps to guide clients toward their goals through fostering insight and acceptance while also reducing avoidance behaviors. I believe that every person has a natural internal strength that I seek to foster through empowerment. My ultimate goal is to help clients drop the struggle and live a valued life so they can manage the inevitable ups and downs of the human experience on their own.

Therapy is where we ease loneliness and deepen connection with ourselves and others. Where we begin to feel safe and ready to make real and lasting change in our lives. Where we gain new understanding & awareness that guides us out of the place we're in, to the place we long to be.

Seeking out therapy is the first step in your journey to healing and understanding. Through therapy, I will work with you to address present challenges, identify tools to navigate current and future difficult situations, and make changes to patterns of behavior or thoughts that are causing distress. We all feel stuck at times. I believe this experience can result from an unhelpful pattern developed over time, and in addition to feeling lost or unfulfilled, we may find ourselves having emotional or behavioral concerns. From a non-judgmental space, I offer a supportive environment to connect while we work together to uncover the patterns that may contribute to pain and problems in your daily life. It is my aim to help illuminate different ways of being so that you may experience less pain, more satisfaction, and a greater quality of life.

Lately, it just doesn’t feel like you can catch a break. It’s one thing after another and you realize you are far down a path you never imagined for yourself. Life can be so unpredictable! It puts you in a place of questioning yourself and it seeps into other areas of your life. That’s why you are here! You may have a tiny bit of perfectionism and often hold yourself to high standards. On the outside you might look like you’re solid and have it all together, but on the inside, you’re feeling lost, not yourself, and you're losing sight of your purpose or direction.

Hi! I am Maria. Are you feeling overwhelmed, confused, alone, or that no one can possibly understand what you are going through? Do you struggle with relationships, in particular the consequences of those relationships? Are you feeling stressed by a pregnancy, communicating with your significant other, decisions around birth control and parenting, and all that's in between?

If you are feeling stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed, therapy can be a safe, non-judgmental, space to process your emotions and gain clarity on what might be contributing to your distress. I would seek to understand your unique situation and perspective, and we would uncover thinking and behavior patterns getting in your way. Whether it's having the tools and skills to cope with daily stressors, managing anxiety, improving relationships, increasing your self-confidence, to living a more purpose-driven life, together, we would develop customized strategies to help meet your desired outcome.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
