I want to say how proud I am of you for exploring the idea of counseling. No matter what phase of life we are in, we all need support, and aren’t meant to make this journey alone. Our life experiences shape and mold us into who we are - sometimes those experiences create moments of great sadness, fear, or anger, leaving us confused and wondering what direction to take. You have what it takes to restore a healthy identity, find purpose in life, and to heal from challenging experiences. My goal is to empower you to create the change you want to see, to help you build the skill set to cope, to heal, and lead a fulfilling life.

Whether mental distress manifests as substance abuse, anxiety, depression, relationship issues or life event stressors, understanding the nature of the mind itself and developing coping techniques to calm waves of agitation is of paramount importance. As mental distress is diminished through counseling techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and mindfulness techniques, then present issues can be examined collaboratively at a pace that feels comfortable. Successful change must be growth enhancing but not overwhelming. Personally, I find yoga and meditation powerful for self renewal.

I am a heart centered leader and you are on the path to heart centered leadership if you have landed on this page. Heart Centered Leadership starts with learning to lead ourselves as unique individuals in the world from a calm body and mind, centered in our hearts, and aware and listening to the wisdom we find there. From here it can expand into other forms of leadership... being the heart centered leader in your family as a parent, being the heart centered leader of your classroom, your school, your business, your corporation, your town, etc. This list goes on and you are on it!

Feelings of depression, anxiety, loss or unexpected life circumstances oftentimes have a crushing way of throwing one off balance. At an emotionally vulnerable time, it may seem even more challenging to take care of oneself and to seek help through therapy. In a safe, empathic, compassionate, and non-judgmental environment, I provide sensitive psychotherapy to adults and couples. I believe that by working with people to help them recognize the origin of their emotional distress will allow them to pull on their strengths to overcome these challenges and gain a deeper level of personal insight.

We all pass through difficult times in life. Divorce, relationship issues, medical problems, current or past traumas, financial issues, family conflict, grief and loss, academic, social and employment problems can impact us all. Depression and anxiety can be biological, rooted in adjustment and or stress, or a result of medical and substance abuse problems. My experience over the past 20 years providing group, individual and family treatment to adults and children has shown me there is no problem that can't be solved with the right combination of coaching, techniques, support and resources.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
