For over 35 years I have worked with individuals, couples and families to solve problems, improve relationships and make life transitions. In this time, I have learned to respect the uniqueness of each individual and family, as well as the abilities and courage they bring to the challenges they face. My approach is friendly, straightforward and solution-focused, but with appreciation for the variety and complexity of factors that may be involved with the issues that folks bring to therapy. I enjoy collaborating with clients to manage stress and modify the patterns of thinking, feeling and acting that concern them.
Although I work with a broad variety of issues, I specialize in relational concerns, especially in helping folks find healing, growth and harmony in their relationships. Additional areas of specialization include grief and loss, substance use, and life cycle transitions (adolescence, young adulthood, marriage, launching/empty nest, and retirement).
As a Clinical Professor of Psychology at Northwestern University, I enjoy the process of integrating new research findings and therapeutic methods into my work. Teaching in a marriage and family therapy training program challenges me to continually reflect on my work, and to identify therapy approaches that fit my clients' specific needs and issues.
