Transgender Therapists in Shorewood, WI
I bring my personal experience as a transgender man to my practice, knowing that shared identity can be an essential part of feeling welcomed in a space of vulnerability.
Life can be challenging: our capacity is split between personal, social and political matters, all while navigating the profound inequities of a capitalist society. Our lives are multi-dimensional, and our approach to taking care of our mental health should be, too. I bring a person-centered, collaborative, social justice-oriented focus to my work, using a variety of therapy modalities because therapy is not one-size-fits-all.

I work with individuals ages 14+, couples, groups, and other relational systems, actively affirming diverse relationship structures and families (blended, queer, child-free, ethically non-monogamous, kinky, etc). The majority of my clients are neurodivergent and/or queer/trans, but I warmly welcome clients of any identity or neurotype. As a therapist, I offer compassion and groundedness to support you as you work through anxiety, identity exploration, life transitions, daily functioning, relationship challenges, or grief.

As a therapist, my speciality is working with chronic overthinkers and intellectualizers. The individuals who feel overwhelmed by life's ambiguity and panicked over change, constantly looking for the "why". I know how exhausting it is to constantly question your own, and other's, actions. Feeling like you need to manage other's emotions is an exhausting, and unsustainable uphill battle. No matter how hard you try to make others happy, you end up disappointing someone.. whether that be a loved one, your boss, or yourself. This constant cycle of feeling like a failure to those you care about is crushing and keeps you spiraling.

Seeking therapy is a courageous first step towards better understanding how past and current experiences impact individual wellbeing. I believe the most important part of treatment is establishing a trusting client-therapist relationship. I work to build a warm, open environment so you feel safe when sharing difficult thoughts and feelings. There are times in life when our usual coping strategies are not enough and feelings of helplessness and inadequacy can take over. Therapy can help to successfully navigate life's challenges and make positive changes that will contribute to improved feelings of competence in managing relationships, transitions, and other stressors more productively.

These techniques can be applied to a range of mental health issues such as trauma/PTSD, stress and anxiety, depression, mood disorders, gender identity issues, substance use, intrusive and suicidal thoughts, relationship/marital issues, anger management and more.
It takes courage to seek help when you are suffering. Taking steps to improve the quality of your life is one of the most valuable gifts you can give yourself. I believe it is the job of a therapist to help people on their journey and that the therapeutic relationship is an essential part of this process. The therapist must create an environment of trust where it feels safe to explore thoughts and feelings in a non-judgmental, supportive manner. In this kind of atmosphere, we can begin the work to identify strengths and diminish self-defeating thinking and behavior so that you can move forward with your life.

My clients are adults and adolescents who tend to identify themselves as highly sensitive, perfectionistic, and self-critical. They often feel intense emotions and have active minds that always seem to be "on". Using strengths-based, solution-focused, and mindfulness approaches, I help individuals learn to step back and notice their thoughts and feelings rather than be controlled by them. In addition to alleviating the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and trauma, these skills allow people to connect with their values and pursue what's important to them.

At the end of the day, therapy is a space for anyone who is curious. Whether someone is struggling with anxiety, relationship issues, grief, life transitions, trauma, or simply a sense that something feels wrong, real change can begin by turning toward our experience rather than away from it.
In session, I help people get to know how they experience their pain — right here, right now. The more we understand what is happening inside and what gets in the way of noticing it, the more we discover what matters to us, what is good for us, and what we truly want. So much of our suffering can shift when we find this solid ground.

Life happens whether we want it to or not. Sometimes what happens is joyful, fulfilling, and transformative. It strengthens, affirms, and develops us. Other times what happens is shocking, stressful, or painful. It shakes us, urges us to question, and even wounds us. What has happened to you? And what is motivating you to sort through the 'stuff' that has happened or is happening? I will meet you at whatever stage, transition, or journey you are arriving, and I will work with you on all levels: mind, body, spirit.

My work centers around those that identify as LGBTQIA2S+, neurodivergent, and/or beautifully complex misfits just trying to find their place in a complicated world. Many are navigating anxiety, ADHD, trauma, or relationship challenges in systems that weren’t built for them. Many are exploring & living polyamory or kink, or are simply trying to find their place in a world that expects conformity. Many are experiencing life transitions like peri/menopause or aging. If you’re looking for a therapist who brings warmth, humor, and radical acceptance, you found her.

Transgender Therapists
As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?
A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.
What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?
Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.
How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?
An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.
How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?
Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
