My ideal client is anyone who wants to better their life and wants assistance in doing so. I work best with teens, young adults, individuals, couples and families that are feeling stuck in life. Together, we can have those tough conversations and work through the mess of relationships and how these are impacting you. I believe that at the heart of psychotherapy is a professional and meaningful relationship between a client or group of individuals and the therapist that can help accelerate changes and purpose within the client's life. I strive to be that therapist for my client's, understanding that this looks different for everyone.

My approach to therapy is collaborative and client-centered - I work with clients to find what feels most helpful for them. I frequently incorporate strategies from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), along with practical tools to help manage anxiety, stress and overwhelming emotions.

My focus might be short term counseling or longer term in-depth psychotherapy, depending on the needs of the client. In all cases, the client-therapist or counselor relationship quality is critical to real sustainable change. This relationship quality is created through empathy, genuiness and respect for the client and a genuine desire on my part to understand. When people feel known accurately and respected, that intangible magic begins to happen which leads to healing. Truth and love are definitely a part of that which leads us directly into the spiritual realm. Individual and couples therapy are my specialties.

I am a compassionate, caring, qualified therapist. Rather than just treating symptoms, I help clients get to the root cause of the problem. Then we work together to change habitual ways of thinking, feeling and behaving into more positive, healthful, life affirming patterns. We also know that a lot of comorbid mental health diagnoses (anxiety, depression, ADHD, austism spectrum, etc) can be exacerbated by situational life circumstances and talk therapy helps so much to work through life's hard times.
I am licensed in Wisconsin with 5 years of professional clinical experience, specifically working with family systems, couples therapy, and individual therapy. I also have worked with all ages. Before that, I had experience in emergency settings and case management. As my role as a therapist, I feel very privileged to be a part of your journey and discovery in therapy. I believe in unconditional positive regard towards my clients, and adhere to the clinically-proven belief that the client-counselor relationship is the highest indicator of successful therapy- more so than any specific modality.

Trauma, a difficult childhood, deep loss—they leave a mark. We’d all love to believe that what happened “back then” doesn’t have to affect us in the “here & now.” But it does. Painful experiences change how we feel about ourselves, relationships, and how we view the world. We want to move on but we're stuck. No matter how hard we try to push the pain back or down or away... it leaks back in and we find ourselves living in the same old pain with the same old problems: Stuck. Exhausted. Frustrated.

Whether it's parent child relationship frustrations, communication difficulties, marital issues, infidelity, sexual problems, employment stressors, depression, anxiety, negative self image, chronic pain, PTSD, self injury or other personal matters, we are specialized to treat a wide variety of symptoms.
Just like a car needs a regular oil change to keep it running smoothly for the long haul, people can benefit from a therapeutic "life tune-up." Maintaining ourselves, and our relationships can decrease problems later on that could be more expensive and damaging the longer they go without repair.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
