I also provide family and couples therapy.
I try and help people increase the "quality" of their lives which often means helping people whose thinking/behavior and feelings don't seem to connect.I use many different approaches to therapy and draw upon numerous orientations if helpful to the client's goal of change. I strongly advocate for the mind/body connection; healthy mind helps the body be healthier. Past issues are of importance but don't have to be the major focus. I can help you with depression, anxiety, relationship issues and PTSD. I am proud to be a Tricare provider.

For more than 30 years I have focused on helping children and adults, individually, in couples, in families and groups achieve strength, peace and confidence by improving conflict resolution, communication, stress and anxiety, anger management skills, child and adolescent behavioral problems, and parenting skills as well as improved functioning and decreased emotional distress related to depression, self-esteem, post-traumatic stress and bipolar disorders.
In addition to general mental health counseling, I have specialized in the area of domestic violence with both perpetrators and survivors of violence since 1980. I offer services for abusive men through the Alternatives and Treatment for Abusive Men Program and counseling for survivors at the Midwest Domestic Violence Resource Center.

To the outside world, you're seen as a pretty together person who's hard-working, accomplished and self-sufficient. When life get's tough, you buck up, soldier on, & "never let 'em see you bleed." You bottle up your pain and keep a tight lid on it. But, behind this exterior, you're actually hanging on by your fingertips. The stress on your shoulders is unbearably heavy & you're overwhelmed, stressed-out, and you feel like you're drowning under the pressure of it all. You're pain is silent, but your suffering is real and it's taking a toll on your health, productivity and your relationships with others.

I have over a decade of experience supporting individuals, couples and youth.
You are someone who holds things together well, maybe too well. You show up for your family, your work, your community, and somewhere in the middle of all of that you have been absorbing a specific kind of weight that most people around you do not fully see or name. It is not just stress. It is the accumulation of navigating spaces that were not designed with you in mind, while also managing everything else life is asking of you. You are looking for someone who actually understands the specific weight you are carrying and can help you work through it at the root.

I see therapy as a collaborative process, where the client takes the 'expert seat'. No one knows you better than yourself. My role is to offer my knowledge when and where appropriate to help you gain insight into your concerns and facilitate the growth or change desired. I try to create a relaxed and non-judgmental environment for my clients. My approach is client-centered and strength based. I treat a wide range of concerns, which include depression, anxiety, sexual trauma, adult survivors of child abuse, eating disorders/body image, relationship concerns, family of origin issues, and grief and loss.

Many of the individuals I work with are thoughtful and capable, yet feel stuck, anxious, or disconnected—often while appearing “fine” on the surface. You may be navigating eating or body image concerns, anxiety, perfectionism, caregiver stress, or a major life transition and wondering why it still feels so hard despite your insight and effort. My work centers on helping you feel more at ease, strengthen self-trust, and move toward a life that reflects your deepest values. Therapy can help, and I would love to support you in that process.

Change is hard but can be welcome relief when we are suffering. I welcome those seeking change, enthusiastically or reluctantly. We are all changing (the only constant). I work with people to make those changes conscious and long lasting. I help them find balance in the change process, recognizing successes and sitting in discomfort together. I have a wholistic approach to meet each client where they are through cognitive behavioral therapy, person-centered therapy, motivational interviewing and trauma informed care.

Change and challenges are a constant in life. Chronic anxiety, grief, loneliness, and sadness make it hard to identify or talk to others about our needs. Therapy can decrease our sense of isolation by normalizing life's challenges while providing opportunities for growth. These experiences begin the healing process that allows us to open ourselves up to new ways of being and experiencing the world around us.

Marriage Counseling Therapists
How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
