I have devoted the past 20 years following my passion of working with, and treating, individuals and their family members who have a severe and persistent mental illness, (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression).
My treatment is focused on reducing the stigma of mental health, maintaining stability, promoting recovery and improving the overall quality of life. Despite their psychiatric difficulties, clients find that with support and treatment, they are able to manage their illness effectively and lead happy, rewarding, and creative lives.

To the outside world, you're seen as a pretty together person who's hard-working, accomplished and self-sufficient. When life get's tough, you buck up, soldier on, & "never let 'em see you bleed." You bottle up your pain and keep a tight lid on it. But, behind this exterior, you're actually hanging on by your fingertips. The stress on your shoulders is unbearably heavy & you're overwhelmed, stressed-out, and you feel like you're drowning under the pressure of it all. You're pain is silent, but your suffering is real and it's taking a toll on your health, productivity and your relationships with others.

I also provide family and couples therapy.
I try and help people increase the "quality" of their lives which often means helping people whose thinking/behavior and feelings don't seem to connect.I use many different approaches to therapy and draw upon numerous orientations if helpful to the client's goal of change. I strongly advocate for the mind/body connection; healthy mind helps the body be healthier. Past issues are of importance but don't have to be the major focus. I can help you with depression, anxiety, relationship issues and PTSD. I am proud to be a Tricare provider.

I specialize in family trauma, including estrangement and no-contact, attachment trauma, reactive abuse, and LGBTQ+/polyamory-affirming care.
I practice therapy as a space for liberation. Rooted in trauma-informed care, my work explores how the systems of colonialism, racism, and carcerality shape our lives and relationships. By examining how these forces show up internally and externally, we work together to reclaim agency and foster change. Therapy isn’t neutral, and I hold space for those harmed by our current system—especially clients facing familial or institutional betrayal, internalized oppression, and systemic barriers.

It is common to have a desire to “fix” something about ourselves or others. Trying to fix can make us feel stuck. It leads to repetitive thinking, arguments, self-improvement traps, anxiety, addiction, depression, avoidance etc. Change comes from a person's openness and ability to get in touch with who they are - not by trying to be who they are not. I believe that we can all live more consciously. Part of this process means facing how we learned to adjust to the deficits in our environment and early caregiving and acknowledging the impact that has here and now. Old habits and patterns hijack and overwhelm us for a reason.

You will be understood and accepted as you are so we can work toward resolving the problems that stand in your way, whether they are challenges you want to face on your own, or relationship issues you want to resolve with your partner or family.
I work with couples, families, and men. I also offer EMDR, a type of therapy which helps the brain reprocess trauma and other distress. I am co-authoring a graduate text for the Marriage and Family Therapy program at Edgewood College. I do not meet with women one-on-one in my office.

My goal as a therapist is not to tell a client what they need to do but instead to help them problem-solve their situation and come up with their own solution. I am then able to provide the client with the assistance, guidance and support necessary in order for them to achieve their self-designed successful outcome.

You may understand yourself better than most people do, and still find yourself caught in the same patterns. The emotions are intense, the relationships feel complicated, and insight alone hasn't been enough to shift things. I work with people who are ready to go beneath the surface, exploring the relational and developmental roots of what's driving the pattern, not just managing symptoms. If you've spent a long time trying to figure yourself out and still feel stuck, I'd be glad to talk.

I am familiar with issues around eating disorders, divorce, single parenthood, child placement struggles, creating a chosen family and what it looks like to rebuild after major life transitions.
My approach is rooted in authenticity and curiosity. My clinical specialty is the intersection of big T and little t trauma and its varied presentations — the ways it surfaces in the body and in relationship patterns. I enjoy working with people who are ready to break old patterns and set healthy boundaries, with themselves and in their relationships that help them to thrive individually and in community.

I work with individuals and couples to identify the source of disconnection in their relationships, understand themselves and others more deeply, and learn how to reconnect with themselves, partners, family members, and friends.
Beyond relationships, I enjoy working with individuals to gain clarity about their values, goals, and priorities so that they are able to live an intentional life that's truly aligned with what makes them tick.

FAQ - About Family Therapy
What issues does family therapy help with?
Family therapy can help families navigate the complex dynamics of family life, including communication challenges and recurring conflict between family members. A therapist can help family members identify dysfunctional patterns in communication and develop healthier ways of relating. Family therapy may also be helpful during major life transitions or stressful events that affect the family system, such as grief, divorce, trauma, relocation, or a serious illness. In some cases, family therapy can support families coping with specific mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, alcohol or substance use disorders, and eating disorders. In these situations, therapy can provide education and support for family members, as well as to the individual with the mental health diagnosis.

How do I know if my family needs counseling?
Family therapy may be helpful if a family consistently struggles with conflict or communication in a way that affects daily life or relationships. It can also be beneficial when someone in the family is experiencing significant emotional or behavioral changes, such as a family member becoming aggressive, withdrawing, or struggling to cope after a traumatic event. Additionally, some concerns, such as addiction or eating disorders, may be especially important to address in the context of the family unit.

Who attends family counseling sessions?
Family counseling sessions are often attended by members of the immediate family, such as parents, caregivers, children, or siblings. However, other family members may attend when appropriate, including grandparents, stepparents, stepsiblings, or co-parents. Who attends may depend on the family’s needs, the therapist’s recommendations, and the goals of treatment.

Can family therapy be done online?
Family therapy can often be done online. Virtual sessions may be especially convenient when family members live in different locations, have busy schedules, or live in an area where family therapists are less accessible. However, online therapy may not be the best fit for every family. In-person care may be more appropriate when there are safety concerns, severe conflict, limited privacy at home, or when young children have difficulty engaging through a screen.

What therapeutic approaches are used in family counseling?
Family therapy can take different forms, including systemic family therapy (exploring how individual actions affect the family), structural family therapy (uncovering the structure and relationship dynamics of the family unit), and attachment-based family therapy (focusing on how bonds between family members shape relationships). Family therapy may also include psychoeducation, which helps family members learn more about a mental health condition and how to respond to it more effectively.

How much does family therapy cost and is it covered by insurance?
Family therapy sessions, which typically last about an hour, often range from $150 to $250 or more, depending on factors such as location, therapist experience, session length, and practice setting. In general, family therapy may cost more than individual therapy because it involves multiple participants and more complex treatment planning. Insurance coverage for family therapy varies by plan. Some plans may cover family therapy when it is part of treatment for a diagnosed mental health condition affecting one family member. However, many plans do not cover therapy for general family conflict, communication concerns, or relationship issues alone. Before starting therapy, it is important to check with your insurance provider to confirm whether family therapy is covered, what your copay or deductible may be, and whether any diagnosis, referral, or prior authorization is required.
