To the outside world, you're seen as a pretty together person who's hard-working, accomplished and self-sufficient. When life get's tough, you buck up, soldier on, & "never let 'em see you bleed." You bottle up your pain and keep a tight lid on it. But, behind this exterior, you're actually hanging on by your fingertips. The stress on your shoulders is unbearably heavy & you're overwhelmed, stressed-out, and you feel like you're drowning under the pressure of it all. You're pain is silent, but your suffering is real and it's taking a toll on your health, productivity and your relationships with others.

I bring to my work a lifetime of experience with many different people in many different circumstances. My early life experience as a registered nurse enriches me as a psychologist and provides me with a unique perspective in navigating the path towards healing. I believe that the psyche holds within itself the power to heal, but our egos often get in the way. Through the struggles of life, we can lose contact with our own deep well of inner wisdom. My focus is on helping individuals develop the tools to re-connect with their true vital selves and restore balance.

My journey to becoming a therapist started after returning home from a combat deployment, experiencing a devastating divorce and years of readjustment difficulties. During these deeply personal experiences, I became aware of the hurt and the brokenness we all face and now have a deep desire to help others to overcome as I did. I am passionate about helping couples find reconciliation and negotiating relationship pitfalls. As well as working with clients to heal from past trauma, manage their anxiety/depression, regulate anger or learn to value themselves again. You don't have to face it alone, there is hope.

The basis of an ideal client in my lens does not have a select issue. Everyone has their life challenges and emotional weight they carry with them. In the end, what I want for my clients is a common goal to be the best version of themselves they can be while being open-minded in facing tasks related to that goal. Whether it is an interpersonal relationship problem, anxiety, substance abuse, etc, the goal is to aim for success in being the best version of one's ideal self they can be. That common ideal goal is what I aim for with every client I work with.

Think of me as your co-pilot — you're in the driver's seat, and I'm here to help guide and support you on the road to where you want to be. I see mental health work as a collaborative, two-way process. First, we focus on building practical tools to help you manage challenges in the moment. Then, together, we explore the deeper issues to create lasting, meaningful change. I work with adolescents (ages 11 and up) and adults.

My approach centers on the mind-body connection. My goal is to facilitate deep healing with psychosomatic therapy. Through interpersonal and systemic traumas, unmet needs throughout life, and generally overwhelming situations, disconnection and an inability to cope can arise. Using approaches, like IFS and somatics, we will work together to process emotions and distress and increase your ability to be present in your life. Through an attuned presence and your mindful awareness in therapy, you can engage in healing and connection to yourself and the world around you. Individual healing is one piece of collective liberation.

Seeking therapy for yourself and your loved ones, is the first step to making your desire for happiness a reality. How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?
Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like Cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?
There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?
Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
