You're pain is silent, but your suffering is real and it's taking a toll on your health, productivity and your relationships with others.
Being open about our challenges and allowing help is hard and uncomfortable... but I know that therapy can be a very helpful resource for individuals seeking clear understanding, useful strategies and new-found strength. Life is too short to suffer in silence & you deserve better than the societal pressure that you do it all alone.

I work with adults (18+) navigating life transitions, identity, acceptance and belonging, and the complexities of relationships including parenting.
My approach to care begins with getting to know you by understanding your experiences within the context of culture, history, and relationships. For the past 20 years, I have worked with families, couples, adults, and adolescents. Using cognitive-behavioral theory with narrative techniques, I help empower clients to explore areas within their lives that present challenges and inhibit change, and assist them with finding solutions that will work for them. However, I also believe that the therapeutic relationship is a vital component within any program, which means that I believe that any work needs to be collaborative between myself and my clients. I am certified to deliver trauma-focused treatments as well as providing services to help manage stress and anxiety.

The foundation of my training and practice is in Interpersonal Process Psychotherapy, which is a great framework for individuals and couples who are having difficulties in their relationships or have a history of relational challenges/wounds.
Nothing ever goes away until it has taught us what we need to know.” -Chödrön, 1997

I work with adults and adolescents in individual psychotherapy and couples counseling.
I believe therapy is a collaborative process in which we will work together to determine your goals and then achieve them. Because I work both cognitive-behaviorally and psychodynamically, I am able to work with you on two different, but both very important levels depending on your goals. On one level, I can help you simply feel better and improve your coping skills. And on another level, and to the extent to which you are interested in doing so, I can help you understand the deeper roots of your symptoms and life patterns.

I believe that everyone has the capacity to grow and change. I work with families and couples who may be questioning their connection to one another, and with individuals who feel stuck, unmotivated, or afraid. As a family therapist, I encourage people to explore how the different systems they are a part of impact the quality of their lives. How does their family function? Their place of work? Their culture? Together we explore how making changes in ourselves impacts our relationships to these different systems. We change our world by changing our relationship to it.

The decision to begin therapy can be overwhelming and can carry a multitude of fears, uncertainties and challenges (Whether you are adjusting to loss, coping with anxiety or depression, or searching for ways to change behavior or attitudes which interfere with relationships or personal growth).
The foundation of my training is built on research-based approaches. I was trained at the Beck's Institute of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in Philadelphia and completed Level 3 from the Gottman Institute for Couples Therapy (research based intervention).

I'm a licensed psychologist who has helped individuals and couples with a wide range of challenges for 25+ years, including with depression, anxiety, anger, self-esteem, alcohol use, and struggles related to a bad childhood; and with marital, relationship, and communication issues
With individuals as well as couples, I encourage enhanced attention to feelings, thoughts, and behavior, and how these interact with each other. With couples, I also encourage slowing down and enhancing communication; facilitate respectful understanding of each person's viewpoint; and address blame and defensiveness that often fuel relationship conflict.

FAQ - About Couples Therapy
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
